I wish I could share moments like this morning with everyone. Since I am fortunate to live where I do I think I should, at least, try.
I woke up early after a restless night of sleep. The dogs took their time, as they stretched their sore muscles, while following me to the back door. I guess that’s what sleeping on the floor does to you. Little Lucy, of course, wouldn’t know; she gets to sleep at the foot of the bed.
I wasn’t sure what time it was, but I could see the morning-light reflecting off the marsh out behind the house. I noticed a ripple in the water through the slight-fog rising in the cool air. It could be one of the beavers that have made my backyard their home, or it could be the mother mallard I saw swimming with her five babies this past weekend.
I made the dogs wait as I stepped out onto the deck in my underwear. I looked to the side of the house to make sure there were no deer eating the dew-soaked morning grass; it was clear. I didn’t want the dogs to chase them if they were there. More importantly there were no skunks in sight.
A bright-golden light caught my eye; for a split-second I wasn’t sure what it was. I smiled when I recognized it as the rays of the morning sun rising over the trees from the other side of the house.
The dogs ran out beside me and down the steps. I watch as they each stopped, and stood at the bottom. I notice that each of them had their noses hard at work. After a few seconds of savoring the fragrance of the morning they walked out into the yard.
With one-deep-breath the troubling dreams of the night were gone. There would be no going back to bed for me. The freshness of another northern morning had its hold on me. I wasn’t going to miss it. Now – all I needed was a cup of coffee. Ah – life is grand.
