I felt like writing and this thought came to mind…
I love talk and stories about ESP, mind-reading, super-human strength, the paranormal and anything that’s generally reported by the public but shunned by science. Perhaps the gauge should be “when it’s taught in public school, it’s been accepted.” They aren’t teaching kids about mind readers and spontaneous human combustion - yet.
But here’s the thing….
The universe. How far into the distance does it go? And what’s beyond that? Science talks vaguely about when the universe was born – but born into what? Something was there for it to be born into. And when did time start? It’s been a few thousand years since Jesus and millions since the dinosaurs. There’s always a date for the start of something. But doesn’t there have to be something infinitely before? And after?
So – I just laid the groundwork.
There are specific, real-world answers to every question I just laid out above about the universe and time. Yep. Answers. But you can’t comprehend them. Here’s why:
Catch an ant – a living, breathing animal – and put him in a jar. Then go find a book from an encyclopedia set. Make it fitting – pick “A”. Lay that book, still closed, on the table. Now open the jar and let the ant walk over the cover. When it’s done, let it walk across the pages – even the section on ants.
It will never comprehend the vast resource of information that is right in front of it. The ant is so close…it’s touching the written explanation of its own existence on the “ants” page. Everything it needs to know is right there. In fact, you shout “Ant! Listen to me!” as loud as you can. But the ant marches haplessly along – off the page and down the table leg.
This is humans. We are ants. How far does the universe go? It’s the single question that makes all religions bow….and the question that will keep you up at night.
But yes, there is an answer to how far the universe goes: we’re just simply just not smart enough to understand it. This is a breakthrough in understanding. It’s a “don’t sweat it” moment. Hooray! Finally…I can’t sleep at night as I ponder the complexities of the universe. I understand that there is in fact an answer – my brain (or body) is simply just not equipped to understand it.
We’re standing on an encyclopedia ourselves. But no matter how hard you try – you’ll never teach an ant how to read – at least today’s ants. Perhaps a few million years of evolution might help them (or us) get closer. We are at that same distance from the answer we seek as an ant is from the written pages it walks across.
Yet unlike an ant, we’re smart enough to at least realize we can’t see or read the “words”.
So – it’s not a stretch to think some human’s experience has tapped into it, if even just slightly. The ESP people. Mind readers. Anything. The existance of ghosts. Goblins. Gifts. And better yet – what about people who might tap into it without even knowing? What about coincidences? The face of a friend you haven’t seen in 15 years comes to mind – and a day later, you run into him at the mall. You keep seeing the same number pop up over and over. I’m not trying to explain any of this – I’m simply saying that any of it could be the unrealized result of “tapping in” to that unknown stuff around us. Perhaps it’s like an ant being able to recognize an “A”. There are 1000s more words, letters, concepts, ideas and even languages in an encyclopedia. The most gifted ant only knows just “A”. Imagine if prophets and “mind readers” were genuine – but they too were only tapped in at the most basic level.
Imagine finding a way to learn more. Certainly, there have been cultures who believed this – even believing they could “transcend” to some other plane of consciousness.
If we could make an ant’s brain as “smart” as a humans – but then proportionally make a human’s brain “smarter” by that same amount – what would we see? Smart may not be the right word – perhaps “receptive” is what I’m looking for.
Words in English from an encyclopedia certainly wouldn’t appear beneath our feet like a giant page. Yet something would appear or be felt – that thing that we’re not yet smart enough to even understand.
The distance between an ant’s brain and human brain is staggering. We know how great a feat it would be for an ant to tap into our world. Yet our world is real. We live in it every day. But to the ant – if the tiny, “dumb” brains they currently have could make a huge jump to the level of intelligence of humans – then they’d certainly avoid anteaters and kids with magnifying glasses. Maybe they’d want to go out to dinner or catch a new movie. All commonplace to us…but a zillion miles away for ants.
I’ll bet there are little ant skeptics busy shunning other ants who swear they see huge beasts swinging encyclopedias in their sky.
Perhaps you now have a little better understanding of how you can approach the paradox of “how far does the universe go” or “when did time start”. But now, you realize there is some merit to understanding there is likely much more around us – even available to us – than we know. So now – do you go looking for it? Try to tap into it?
Logically, I’d have to believe that while our brains are not capable of understanding it much further – equally our bodies physically aren’t capable of “tuning in”. We don’t have the right antennae. Then the question becomes “can we amplify”? Perhaps drugs could shut down certain areas of the brain, perhaps raising awareness of other areas. But that’s been done (pretty sure they called it “the 60s”). Perhaps certain places on Earth allow better reception. There are certainly locations where people have tried it across history.
Ultimately, anyone actively seeking out this greater awareness is typically labeled. I don’t believe it’s meant for us yet…we’re not ready. I believe the human (or animal) species is evolving, and certain individuals may be able to tap into “what exists” in a minute sense. But with our limited bodies, any grand connection into it would be presently impossible. And this could be for good reason. What newfound dilemmas would proceed when it was realized that certain humans could definitively read minds, teleport, or exist in ways we’ve never known when the majority of other humans couldn’t?
Yet what constitutes “being ready”? Perhaps it’s a collective understanding – a joint human consciousness where most believe vs. most deny. Then when single individuals stand up and showcase their new talent – others stand behind them vs. labeling them as “odd”, “different” or just plain “crazy”. This would pave the way for everyone to open their minds. Instead of nobody hunting for gold because the hills are empty - now everyone is out hunting with open minds.
But to come full-circle and bring a little fun back into this, it’s not a stretch to think that ESP, mind-reading, super-human strength or the paranormal is real – not just a figment of someone’s mind. Perhaps their mind is actually just a little more tuned than yours.
So the next time you see an ant, get close to him and whisper, "don't worry little buddy...you guys will get there one day." Then look up.
