Billy Joel's The Stranger
Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Apples and oranges in a cart for sale and a motorcyle. Someone is just driving away. There's grass and sun. Eat some b'sgetti. This comedy is old, old, and getting older all the time - but it still makes me laugh. I'd help you with those boxes, but in the end neither of us would want me there.
The Stranger
The only things that happened that were truly good were the things that happened while you were happy. I'm too scared to even look out the window. Didn't you see the moon tonight? This thing crawls on it's belly. Every night used to get you in trouble - the way you left them.
Just the Way You Are
There is a Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood where on every Tuesday one of the owners sings to a flower. Is this the afghan that grandma knitted me? No. Way deep down, down deep below the surface, sounds are being made that we always knew were. When I saw the bounce, that's when I felt I knew. It always happens in these parts. A look like shining glass windows.
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
It's very obvious that most artists are poor, and when they succeed they become apart. Whenever we'd look in the eyes, we'd always look down at the floor. Like a pirate ship that flies through the sky with sails made of bedsheets. The captain is soaked and it's raining. Calendars on warm basement wood walls, October through the end of the year - the only time of year that anything begins and ends. A man scattering peanuts. I've never seen anything so checkered. Brown and orange and green, like blowing flames through the woods. I didn't know that somebody so old would be going to get it for me. That golf course is a really good place to eat. Like, in the clubhouse. It's not enough just to like it, that's when you embarrass yourself. We're disappearing back into clouds.
Vienna
I don't like all the meat I've been served, and I like meat. Moving forward and backwards made me feel sick like a boxer. I don't want to go there, but don't think I've believed a word you've said. Cans smeared with oil lying in an alley with no creatures.
Only The Good Die Young
The church that shines like gold, with all the kids playing the bushes. I remember driving over that bridge in the summertime. The sky was pink and we were near our highschool. We had a lot going on. An SUV had rolled but nobody was blamed or hurt. A time in my life when the object had to be kept clean. We'd shine the curved plastic spine on the globe whenever we could.
She's Always A Woman
Celebrations after anything and everything. The women out there named Lucretia. Chicken in an oven, all chopped up and soaked.
A funeral passed through a field of daisys. The priest at the front of the line enjoyed the sun. A kitchen with yellow lineoleum and a temple pattern. I tried that - it didn't work. Heat registers and newpapers. She doesn't know how to sew a zipper onto my coat and asks me, "Buttons?" "No," I reply. And then right away, "Yes". He walked his dog one last time and didn't tell anyone he had done it.
There is nothing but a few plates between us. Am I as familiar to you as these old cartoons?
Get It Right The First Time
Let's put the elephants at the beginning of the parade this time. Put the old champions in the backseat. You should quit being a comedian, and just motivate. Pineapples and coconuts discovering each other. The light you show is not real light. Just let me chew on this eraser a little bit longer. She could sell me some toothpaste without even smiling. "Who's that?" "It's my cousin," I lied.
Just a little bit of the background keeps you around.
Everybody Has A Dream
When the aliens get here, we'll hold The Beatles that much closer. I'll sing a fake anthem, if you please. Bury me in tradition, pile it on me until it's covered all of you. When the time machine tears open the heavenly heavens like a car alarm in the night, I'll do my Christmas shopping for all of you in a time that existed before our parents were even grown. I'm trying to arrange it so I'll be able to keep on working.
