    October?

Is anyone else doing this in October like me?
I will have lots of schoolwork in Nov, so I'm going to do it a month early. And, as a bonus, I will have Halloween as my celebration night.

That kind of defeats the purpose. I mean, really anyone can write a novel anytime they please, but writing one in November allows you the camaraderie of many others doing the same thing and the fun of participating with everyone else.

Yeah, but the whole idea is that you start at the beginning of a month and end at the end of it so that you have a precise deadline. I mean, that's why I posted this: to get some camaraderie.

Heh. Siglark whatever works for you works for me. Good on ya mate! I'm participating in November though I have a SHIIIIIIT ton of work for my classes, I don't care. I'm doing it anyway cuz I've flaked out for the past two years.

Next year for sure! I need to get a few books out of my mind and on paper. Once I can do that, I can start marketing it.

Just reached the halfway mark. Things are cooking nicely.
Actually, this whole experience is really good for me. I have felt more focused and happier lately, although I have been having some trouble getting all of my other essays written.
The big thing that I am lamenting is that I need to put a creative writing portfolio together and I have no creative energy or drive to write or revise short stories after I have already been working on my novel for a while, but maybe this weekend I will just kick my own butt into gear.

Congrats on the halfway point, Siglark! Keep it going.

Oy! I fell behind for a little, but now I'm caught back up. It feels really really good not to have that hanging over my head. Honestly, I'm very surprised that I have stuck with this for so long. I thought that I would have given up by now. But I'm not! I'm still fighting. This novel is taking lots of turns I never had planned, but then I just started with one character and a general idea, so it would have to.
I've been thinking about this thread, and when this whole thing really gets going, I think that it's good that people will have little snippets of my journey, since it happened just before theirs. Which gives me extra initiative to stay on top of things.
    I'm at 30,685 words, btw

So, I was writing a fairly linear soft sci-fi about how the power structure of a planet is disrupted by our protagonist, who lands on the planet and proceeds to wander around aimlessly as everyone falls over themselves trying to get him to help them.
Then I got bored and fast forwarded twenty years, when our protagonist has left for the jungles of the deep south, was nearly forgotten about except by a boy he had hung around with a lot, who was now living in a considerably worse world since the man's sudden appearance and disappearance. Stick with me on this one. The boy travels south to find the man. The boy's father, a higher-up in the government pursues him because he thinks he's been kidnapped. Lots of stuff follows.
Then my story took a drastic turn.
I slept in from class this morning, and awoke at noon with the most bizzare and vivid dream I've ever head of people living on a space station that seems to run on absolute absurdity. But, I figure that I've already introduced space dwellers and the theater of absurd into my story, so I could get away with a huge jump, so I wrote my dream into the story.
This is all to say that now I can alternate between a linear story and absolute insanity at will now. This is NaNoWri-ing, seizing any possible inspiration and running with it.

Exactly! It'll be interesting to go back and read everything you put together. Even more interesting after you set it aside for a few months and then re-read it!
