There are cave systems in the Maya Mountains which are said to be the entrances to the underworld. Some geologists claim there is only one cave system, that all the caves are inter-connected. Many of the caves have ancient Mayan artifacts indicating they were either habitations or sacred places. I've only been inside one, Saint Herman's Cave south of Belmopan in the Cayo District. Strange experience. If you can, get a copy of the Popol Vu.
I saw a documentary on areas on the earth that people think are entrances to hell. Xibalba of Mayan lore in Belize came up and I immediately wondered if our intrepid reporter ever checked them out.
