Steady but gentle, the breeze behind us is a welcome companion. The night air is muggy, and still quite warm. Sitting on the earthen levee on any other night, we would have been alone, but tonight is different. Everywhere there are small clusters of people, most sitting, some standing, but all waiting. Laughter accents muted conversations. All of us face the lakefront. All of us wait expectantly.
In the distance, sirens wail, accompanied by the rude and throaty honks of firetrucks. Flashes
