Only Your Rivers Run Free

This is one of the most poignant songs in the history of Irish music. The all-time best version is sung by Tommy Fleming, but I can't find his version on you tube anywhere, so this is next best thing.

YouTube - Eire Og-Only our Rivers Run Free

ONLY YOUR RIVERS RUN FREE

When apples still grow in November,
When blossoms still bloom from each tree,
When leaves are still green in December,
It's then that our land will be free.

I wander her hills and her valleys,
and through all my sorrows I see,
a land that has never known freedom,
and only your rivers run free.

I drink to the death of her manhood,
Those men who'd rather have died,
than to live in the cold chains of bondage,
to bring back their rights were denied.

Oh where are you now that we need you?
What burns where the flame used to be?
Are you gone like the snows of last winter?
And still only your rivers run free.

How sweet is life but we're crying,
How mellow the wine but it's dry,
How fragrant the rose but it's dying,
How gentle the wind but it sighs,

What good is youth when its ageing?
What joy is in eyes that can see?
When there's sorrow and sunshine and flowers,
and still only your rivers run free.

Check it out if you like. It's a very emotional song - for me, anyway.

Sam.

How beautiful the words of such a tender song. My family is Irish...mostly, I have relatives who never moved to America, but chose to stay in Ireland. I so often feel cheated out of not knowing a place such as you have known yours.

Thank you for sharing this song. I must now share it with my brother. He loves all things Irish, having educated himself with the rich history. He has even begun to learn the language. Isn't the language diverse?

Have a nice evening Sam, feel free to share more in the future.

Thanks for that, Robin. How ironic it is that I wish for English as a second language. I never fully learned Irish, and it's one of those things that I'll regret until I get around to doing it. This is one of those songs, similar to Michael Flately's Riverdance, which makes me proud to be Irish. You've heard of Riverdance?

You should visit. The one thing about Ireland: everyone's welcome.

All the best, Robin.

Sam.

I would love to, actually some of my family are planning a late spring or early summer trip to Ireland. My brother is going and my uncle, a lot of Connors.
It would be nice to get away and see of the history that makes your country so fascinating.

Oh~I love the Riverdance.

Have a Nice Day, Sam.
