If I may put my neck back on the chopping block and offer my own opinion...and please note, that I only speak for myself and in no way intend to force my views on anyone, merely to state my own case.

This forum has rules against advertising, yes. The fella wasn't advertising a service or product or selling anything. He asked for collaboration. Now, isn't that a fraction of why a forum like this exists? Especially in the lyrics thread. Everything we do here is an advertisement. We are advertising ourselves, our names, our writing, our reputation. Who here doesn't want to be recognized for what he or she writes? Who here posts and hopes nobody notices or that what he or she writes will never appear in print? Of course not! We are all advertising our skill.

This forum (and others like it) do not exist in a vacuum. This forum is a tool for writers not only to post their stuff and get their ego stroked (or poked, lol), but also as a springboard to launch their work into the "real" world. I would more easily respond to a request here than I would one from someone I didn't know in my inbox. The purpose of being on this forum, for me, is to actually use my skills in the real world, and I will take every opportunity to do so as long as it is not unethical, immoral or illegal.

Now, before you lower the guillotine, I also understand the view that some people hold about the "post and run" types, how such behavior can be interpreted as a slight against the faithful forumites.... even though I disagree with that view. I just have to remember that the person who makes 1 or 2 posts and isn't around anymore is not out to offend me, but out to give me an opportunity, so why should I take offense? I can answer the post or leave it alone.

Chop away... lol

I'm not chopping at anything, it's that very view that's causing so much of the tension on this thread. Accusing me of having an attitude, and now inferring that I want to chop your head off, and it's simple not the case.

The fact of the matter, and the reason I won't e-mail this guy is because he doesn't have the courtesy to stick around. Yes, maybe this would be his only thread, he'd get a couple of posts and run, that happens all the time. But to simply make the thread and then run is something that I believe goes against the existence of this forum.

We are all here to help and be helped, or that should be the intention. This guy was only here to be helped.

Thamior, what is he advertising again?

I don't know what version of the English language you are using, but he made a request, I don't see any advertisement.

And your attitude sucks, I haven't seen this guy come back and ask "why didn't you e-mail me". He made a request, and gave us full freedom to take him up on his offer, he never forced us, blackmailed us, or even scrutinized us in the slightest way about any choice we'd make. No let me ask you, what courtesy is this to speak off, when you aren't even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, why he should give it to you?

And get off your high and mighty horse, I didn't contribute anything? Please notice that the only one of us who is actually contributing to this thread is the person who started it, if we weren't all high and mighty about ourselves there would have been 2 responses tops.

There is no "high and mighty horse" my contribution was the same as Crash, wondering why he didn't have the decency to continue what he started here. All you did was join in when you smelt blood being spilled, nothing you've said has been in topic from the beginning.

Advertisement:
  1. A notice, such as a poster or a paid announcement in the print, broadcast, or electronic media, designed to attract public attention or patronage.
What he did was make a public announcement and then left. He didn't do something like the rules would allow, such as putting something up for critique, or, at the very least, continuing to respond in this thread or visit writingforums again at all.

The attitude is not mine, I just wish more people would do something for the forums rather than use it as their personal advertising space for what I they want.

I'm sorry that I rush to protect injustice when I... pftt HAHAAHAH.
Your damn right, one thing I can't stand is shit being slung at people without any effort to make it look good, exactly what you are doing.

This is where your logic falls apart, there is a reason there are more than one definition for a word, and that is so that people can understand them.
advertisement - Definitions from Dictionary.com

Advertisement means to bring or call forth attention, in one sense. In the sense its used here(that WF does not allow advertisement) it's talking about stuff such as websites, products etc. Now I might be wrong on this, but I don't think WF has anything against "advertising" employment. Also, by definition, we are all advertising on this page, every single one of us, should we all suffer and be banned then? IT's a lose lose situation, but lets go further shall we?

Now since you pride yourself in your use of language, and were ballsy enough to throw in a dictionary page, I'm going to respond the same way.

Request: the act of asking for something to be given or done, esp. as a favor or courtesy; solicitation or petition
Now tell me, which of these definition suits what he did better? Did he draw public attention? or did he ask for something to be done? If you choose the former, you horribly lack either common sense, or an understanding of the difference between these two words. He didn't draw attention to himself, he didn't put the title in big broad letters, he didn't post it in multiple forums, he didn't spamm it, he posted ONCE and asked us if we could help him, and contact him at his e-mail. That is called a request.

And notice, while solicitation is included, I suggest you check up the definition and realize that not all parts apply, definition exist in multitudes by use.

There is your actual argument. "I don't like it". I'd be fine with that, if it wasn't for the hundreds of times you've stepped all over me for coming in and doing the exact same thing, albeit sometimes a little more extravagantly.

Oh and, we are all using the forums for what we want. Honestly, if you're fighting for the common good and honor of the writing forums, you're about an eternity too late.
I can play dictionary wars all you want, bottom line is, neither of us is going to win.

He posted it in the wrong space Mystery, there's a section for things like this. End of story. Hopefully a mod will lock this, the original poster isn't coming back.

No surprise to me he didn't come back. The first reply would have looked either ignorant or obnoxious.

But by the way....

Because, this forum is not meant for solicitations.
The idea of calling somebody asking for lyrics for a song "advertisement" is ridiculous.
Best to let the moderators police the forum. They do a much more intelligent job.

Meanwhile...a guy came here LOOKING FOR LYRICS. Any idea how rare that is? It pisses me off people would give them a hard time.

I don't care how rare it is. Consider how rude you are being. He is not contributing to the forum at all, that is what gets under my skin. This forums is not some little farming ground for people to go to, make one AD, and then leave. If he really wanted something maybe he could have looked at some lyrics, made some comments and asked as well. Posting on this thread in response to what people asked him. His post, and this thread in no way further Writingforums or the Lyrics section.

I've been here longer than any of you, I remember when I'd post a lyric and never see a response for weeks. What I want is for lyrics to grow, not to gather people to continue asking for lyrics, pushing the things that are truly meant to be here down under them.

Alone doesn't really matter to me much. I'm going to ask a mod to close it. It's only inviting dispute.

Thamior...you are being an asshole. Nobody minds somebody dropping into a forum LOOKING FOR WRITING/

You do get that, don't you? Well, probably not. So ask yourself this...what the fuck are YOU contributing here? All concerned about somebody else's post, getting all hysterical about what it not your business, does no harm, and could have ended up being fun for somebody.

Like I said...there are people who police this site. Fortunately you aren't one of them. So why don't you chill out. (which means, basically, shut up)

Because, neither do you police the forums. And I will not shut up because you ask. You call me an asshole, but read your responses and I think you'll find yourself no better.
