herd
Here's another from the upcoming cd, originally written in 1981 and very influenced by Pink Floyd's Animals disc. I've posted this because of the PF references in the comments for call me joe-the music is here if you'd care to listen...the lead guitar track will be edited for the vocal version. Thanks for reading and remarking
herd
grazing in meadows made of steel and glass
the herd marches on
devouring everything that lies in its path
the herd marches on
lemmings, determined, but they're gradually learning
that there's no easy way out
sharing a laugh before they head for the sea
the herd marches on
i cannot see, but i think one is me
the herd marches on
i'm certain one's you, if you think this thing through
but it scares me that i can't be sure
pick up the ball and we'll see in the fall
if the crowds start thinning out
anyone's game today and winner takes all
that's what it's all about
the winners will know before they step on the field
but there's no easy way out
over and over, still the same old game
still the same ways of growing old
moving in suddenly, a horde with no name
the herd comes in from the cold
turn up the music just as loud as you like
in the morning we head for the shore
and so it goes
and so it goes
and so it goes
cannot stop the march
or stop myself from following
can't stop
can't turn back the clock
it's never a lock until you've run out the clock
and the fat lady has sung
go round the block til you've holes in your socks
and the dinner bell has rung
after you eat you get back on your feet
the herd won't stay still for long
everyday folk who like to share in the joke
the herd marches on
having a smoke under evening's cloak
the herd marches on
your sisters, your brothers, and billions of others
the herd can't rest til they're dead
time flies at different speeds for you and me
time flies, and every tick is a beating heart
time flies, for only a moment in infinity
time flies away before you know it
isn't the universe flying apart?
the center cannot hold
