Little did he know... your thoughts

Tell me, how do you feel about the phrase, or even the style of writing known as "little did he know"?

I don't know much about writing, and can add nothing on the subject of a writing style known as "little did he know". But I do know this: "little did he know" is a cliché, and my old Granny always said to avoid clichés like the plague.

It's worse tham a cliché, it's trite and it's lazy.

Along the lines of: "I've told you a million times: do not exaggerate!"
