Dog Earring
Does anybody here Dog Ear their books? A guy at my writing workshop told me that's disrespectful, but I find it more convenient than buying like thirty book marks, considering I read several books at a time.
If so, I want to apologize to everyone I've offended, namely Dumas, Vonnegut, and Homer.

What does the library think of your little rebellion?

I don't dog-ear my books, and I'm afraid I go ballistic when friends do that to the books which I lend them. Personally, I memorize page numbers (unreliable method if I leave a book for a few weeks) or shove a postcard in between pages.
Dog-ear-ing a book is less scary then opening one and smacking it facedown to put pressure on the spine, I think. Some of my friends do that to their own books, and mine - now that's disrespectful.
From VCU Libraries | Preservation | How to Protect Your Library and Its Books : - Use bookmarks to mark your place. Folded corners and objects placed between pages eventually ruin a book. Laying a book face down will weaken and crack its spine. Book marks are available free of charge at the Circulation Desk.
- Keep books out of direct sunlight and away from moisture.
- Do not use paper clips, rubber bands, or Scotch tape in books. They can easily tear paper.

I don't like doing anything that will damage a book's condition be it the pages or the spine.
Call me anal, but I like my books looking forever new.
I don't know about reading several books at a time, but I get along fine without bookmarks. I tend to stop at chapter markings as well so I can find my way back easier. (And it also helps me finish the book faster - One more chapter before bed. Just one more. And one more. And one more)

I stopped buying traditional bookmarks when they began costing as much as the books themselves. I use just about anything for a book mark. Toilet paper (unused only!), pieces of mail, pictures, trading cards, playing cards, etc...

At least it's reassuring.

I am a bibliophile, like most of us here, but admittedly, i do tend to dog-ear the pages of books that i own. I will usually make them very, very small ones though. If i am reading a book of short stories (Year's best fantasy and horror for example,) i will dog-ear the pages of the stories that i really enjoyed so i can go back and re-read them to see what aspects made them good.

Haven't you been told? Size doesn't matter.

I usually read anywhere from 3 to 6 books at a time, carrying them with me just about everywhere i go. I do use bookmarks in some of my books, but i generally only buy used books, so an extra crease here or there doesn't really deface them that much. Besides, whats the difference? I have three hundred plus books that i never get rid of, so i'm the only one who reads them. You don't like the way i keep track of my pages? Tough sh*&. Tell it to someone who cares.

I used to, but then i stopped reading for a bit, then started again, and now i have a million things to use as book marks, so i have no need.

Yep, I dog-ear books. And I hope if I get a book published, people will dog ear my books too. It shows (to me) a bit of friendly intimacy with the book. Kinda like giving the nice little shoulder punch to a buddy.
