So... what's the done thing around here?
Hello all!
Nice to meet you.
Obviously I'm not sure about this statement quite yet, but why start with a doubt?
This, besides my introduction in...well...introductions, I guess, is my first post.
So, let me not trudge along the endless road of avoidance, but get straight to the nitty gritty of my dilemma as it is:
What's the etiquette on posting here?
Let me explain.
Either I can dive into one of the forums (fora? But that sounds like a colon disorder to me) and start criticizing everyone right, left and centre or I can plunge into one of the forums and post something of my own first.
The first option seems to suggest a big nose, a big mouth and someone who wants to dish out rather than receive.
The second option, on the other hand, seems to suggest an enormous ego; someone who wants to receive rather than give.
Which loops me back down to the question at hand. What is, actually, the done thing?
Cheers!

Well. I did.
Obviously.
All they suggest is that one should "balance things out".
Yes.
But we all know that first impressions are very important!
I don't want to be on book as a loud mouth or an ego-maniac.
Hence what the done thing is question.

Nor does one want to seem as someone who can't make choices!
Damn.. Damned if I do, damned if I don't!

Giving the poetry forum as an example, it is preferred that you comment on other pieces, those who give reviews tend to get them back. Also that you don't post more than one or two new threads a day for a review. The reason for the second being that the forum is quite busy and poems get knocked to page two, where they can easily be forgotten, when people flood the forum with new posts.

It's a good idea to get out there and read some of the work that other people have posted on this site first, before posting something of your own. A well thought out critique (something helpful and lucid) will be remembered by the artist. I usually seek out the people who write well. These are the people you want critiquing your work, as they tend to know what they are talking about.
Once you've built a reputation as a generous critic, post your own work. With luck, those who you've critiqued will return the favor.
There's a great group of writers here.
Good luck.

Some of us are real buttholes though, so be careful of that too.

As for the "start criticizing everyone right, left and centre" part. Let me ask you: What kind of responses do you hope to get for you own work? Honesty (tempered with tact)? Sure. Constructive critiques that will improve your work? Absolutely. Bash and smash? Not at all. "Wow! EEEEEE! I was awesome! I wish I was you!!!" Nope - kudos are nice, but they won't help the writer or work improve. Of course, neither will "That sucked. Quit writing and take up wire jewelry making."
I think you're focusing on the word "critique" here instead of the word constructive (as in constructive critique). Tell what worked for you and why. Tell what didn't work for you and why. Give your thoughts. And do it in the way that you hope others will give to you. Remember: we don't shoot writers here. We help them, and so help each other.
Which to do first though? If you want critiques, you have to give 'em.
