many aren't and some are... you can find out which are which by googling for feedback and checking their rules 'n regs and other info... and you can check preditors & editors to see which have been reported and listed there...

P&E isn't a good source for which competitions are legit and which are not. They won't recommend any paying competition, which leads some people to think that all paying competitions are scams, which of course many of them aren't.

Rob

There are some that are, but dozens more that are a horrible scam. Writer Beware! ( At Last! Writer Beware Blogs! A.C. Crispin and Victoria Strauss Reveal All!) a good database on legit/not legit writers contests, and update regulaurly. I"d check there before submitting anything...

Some are out and out scams. But the thing is... are any of them worth entering?
I'd say no. Unless they are free.
Why pay money for this? Your chances or winning are very slim...and have not much to do with the worth of the piece. There is very little relationship between winning contests and making sales.
Why not do the ultimate contest:The Market? Pay postage and return and enter your stories into a system that if you win you get money and credits?
For reasons to complicated to get into here, there are a couple of screenwriting contests that are worth entering. But for other kinds of writing, it's a waste of time and money.
