Geocaching?

A treasure hunt for nerds! (And since I'm a nerd, I mean that in the best possible way.)

From Wikipedia: "Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little monetary value. Today, well over 430,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the sport. Geocaches are currently placed in 222 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica."

Does anyone do this? I just heard about it and I'm really interested in your experiences, what you've found, what you've left, etc. It sounds really fun, but I will have to invest in a basic GPS device first.

No it wouldn't Der Parvenu Meister and I fail to see how you can think it would.

Ah, that's okay, Olly and Shinn. DPM was just being silly.

Since starting this thread, I got a GPS and have found almost 50 caches. It's really a lot of fun, but you need to enjoy the thrill of the hunt more than the treasure. I haven't found anything of any value, but I always have a good time finding them.

Jocelyn, wonder if you can do that kind of thing in New Zealand?

You sure can. Go to Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site and scroll to New Zealand in the country section on the right hand side. I just did it and looked like there were over 1500 caches in the North Island and over 1800 in the South Island.
