A character like Peter Pan...

In my story, the main character, a boy around fifteenish enters some fantastical world, etc. And upon entering it, you become ageless, and it works perfectly with the story, but the character also obtains certain magical/whatever powers because of whatever. One of those abilities is flying, but he isn't an expert at it or anything.

I will probably have to add magical abilities to make it seem less like I'm trying to imitate Peter Pan, which I'm not.

But, he's in some fantastical world, he can fly, he's ageless, I mean, do you think people would consider it some sort of Peter Pan cop-out?

Either way, I'm still writing it, but I still care what you guys think, and I'll probably change it a dozen more times, but maybe the change will make the story better. Who knows?

*And no, the fantastical world isn't on an island, there are no pirates, and there are no lost boys, nor is there any reference to the actual real world; like London and such. And there are no mermaids and/or Tinkerbells... or indians...

Your avatar doesn't convince me of that argument.

Just kidding. Make the setting and characters unique to your story and you won't have a problem.

If the setting for your story is nothing like never-never land, which it sounds like it isn't, and you don't have your main character flying around in a pixie outfit then you'll be fine. In all honesty, you'll probably be the only person thinking, "this character's a Peter Pan clone!"

Hmm, a Peter Pan clone. There's a story in there somewhere!

"Fifteenish" immediately separates you from the literary Peter, inasmuch as Barrie said he "had all his first teeth" when the Darlings first saw him. Hollywood versions nothwithstanding, Peter was a little kid, not a teen.

I agree with everything thats been said, the writter can be more critical of their own work than the readers who may give the thought no mention or a passing glance at worse.

If the setting is anything to do with war or anything remotely mature content you'll be fine.

I figured that. xD I'm too fond of the flying feller. And agelessness is beyond kick-assness.

The way you describe it, it does sound like a rip-off....

but if you do it right, and make no obvious references to peter pan, many readers might not even take notice. Try it and see what you come up with, but don't try to hard to seperate yourself from peter pan or else your story will seemed forced and fake.

Nothing wrong with that.

Your story is your own, no matter how similar it may seem to something else, it's still your story...

lisajane is an unknown quantity at this point
It definitely sounds like a complete rip-off at the moment but hey, the story might be unique in the end.

Yeah, I was afraid that it'd seem like a giant ripoff. But it's very different. For one, there are no fairies--at least not yet, and I don't think there will, the villain isn't a dude--or is she? hmm..., There's wizards and such, er, only two actual humans, the other two characters are an elf and a druid, and there will be a huge battle/war.

Those are also not Peter Pan related, so yeah.

It is starting to sound a little less like Peter Pan.

Do this... write the story... give it to someone to read and DO NOT mention anything about the story or about peter pan. After they read it ask them what it reminds them of or what they thought of it.

If they say it is too much like peter pan than you may need a re-write.

Good advice, thank you. I actually haven't even joined the main character to his partners, so I still have a long way to go, and a lot more to write--so I'll probably add Peter Pan differences to it, but I won't do too many to make it obvious or anything.

Just remember.. don't add them for the sake of adding them or it will seem forced and people will know you are trying to seperate yourself from Peter Pan.

As your story developes you will have things that work and things that don't work. If something doesn't work get rid of it.

Write "your story" don't right "your not peter pan story"

That's what I was trying to say I would do, but I like the way you worded that.
