What is your story "prep time"

For the past two weeks I have labored to conceive and give substance to a story. Then I wondered: how long do most people take to prepare a story for writing?

Preparing a story includes: the conception of the central idea, characters, and setting; a loose understanding of the events the story will follow (the plot); and all research that must be done prior to writing.

So what is your average story preparation time? Mention the length of the story.

Hmm... That varies alot for me. For short stories my ideas come between a minuet or a day or two. For longer stories (all of which I have ditched...) usually between a few hours and a few weeks depending on how much time have to think and my mood.

I am currently writing a short story that had the prep time of about a week, and it was all in my head. For short stories it is usually all in my head

I am planning a novel and have been doing that for about 2 weeks now, but.... I have had this novel in my head for over 2 years so if you count all that (and you should) prep time can be a lot or a little.

All depends on the piece.

I write mostly short stories and a few poems. A good portion of them I write in five minutes.

But with my longer story ideas it varies. I've had a couple forming in my head for months. Don't rush it, it will come together in it's own time.
