"Tomboy"?

I am curious what normal people think about the appearances of other people. Of course, I highly respect the WrtingForums community, and hardly expect you to abide by stereotypes, but I'm just curious.

So, if you see a girl in the mall... Her brown hair is barely past her ears, and she isn't wearing any makeup. In her right ear she wears one medium-sized silver hoop earring. She's wearing a green t-shirt that's not form-fitting, but not baggy. Her pants are obviously guy's pants. They're baggy and written on, with ink and paint stains, and a rip at one knee. She has a wallet chain, and if she takes out her wallet, you'd see that it has an NES controller on it. Her shoes are black and white Converses, and are almost completely covered by her too-long, men's jeans.
What is your first impression?

First, what do you think this girl is trying to say about herself? And do you think she is accomplishing it?

Well, that's the point. What would YOU think she was trying to accomplish, if you saw her?

In all seriousness though... girls can wear some of these things sepreately, but what you described is a recipe for alternate lifestyle.

Don't get me wrong though.. I never care what people look like or how they dress. I like it when people do what they want and do not care about the opinions of others. There have been times when I have defended absolute strangers in the mall, because my wife or a friend was making fun of them.

Ahh.... I thought so.
In case you were wondering, that was me at the mall today. I just threw it all together. It was comfortable. My mom said people would probably think I was a lesbian. But then again, she thinks a wallet chain is a sure sign that a girl is a lesbian. She says it's an 80's thing. So I was wondering what all the people who gave me looks in the mall were thinking. I swear I saw guys looking me up and down, thinking, "Dyke? No dyke?"
I'm not, just for the record, but I'd rather be "dyke" than "slut" or "prep." At least I'm an individual.

I figured you had an agenda when asking that question...

Again, dont worry about what people think, do what is comfortable and what you like.

Oh and a chain wallet on a girl is a sure sign of lesbian. For the record

Really? I know plenty of girls who use wallet chains. All I ever knew it meant was that they shop at Hot Topic. Then again most of them are Bi...

Hm. I would very unclimactically think 'girl, teenager, out for a day'. I'm a person that calls it what she sees it. That's what I see. Of course if you shouted at me while brushing past "I love dykes!", I would probably think 'girl, teenager, our for a day to let out steam at hapless passersby'.

I'm boring like that. And ennervating. Like when a guy was describing to me his sleek new porshe and I was to understand more than 'guy, in love with his new sports car, will eventually grow out of it'. Heh.

I often cause people this reaction with subtle messages they want to get across:

And then, being the shrink I am, I go ahead and infer other messages, they did not intend to get across.

The hoop-in-one-ear thing seems kind of lame. Is that some sort of fashion statement? Otherwise, seems like reasonable dress for a modern teen.

I just like the way it looks. Is that what you'd call a fashion statement?

Yes I think it is. I can't judge it aesthetically if I haven't seen it, so I'll take your word that it looks good. I think the whole clothing issue comes down to how you feel. If you feel uncomfortable in that get-up, and you think people are judging you, don't wear it. If you aren't bothered, wear it.

Well, I don't care what people think. I have my own idea of what looks good, and I wear what I like. I just wondered what exactly other people DID think.

Let me rephrase. What people think won't make me change how I dress. But I do wonder what they think.
