On selling out and critics
This is just a rant I found written by Dave Eggers in response to a letter he received questioning whether he thought he had sold out. I found it to be very interesting and wanted to share it with you.
Scroll a little past halfway down, where it says "Now, the addendum." and begin there. It is really quite releavant to what we do, so I would recommend giving it a read.
[if this is in the wrong forum, sorry.]

I find it personally offensive to define anything Dave Eggers writes as a "rant." Rants are strictly belligerent, stream of semi-conscious drivel barfed up by people apparently allergic to grammar and logical discourse.

Tell him that. He called it a rant. His word, not mine.

Sigh. Now I'm confused and depressed.

Some of the article made valid points, but something I wish he would have touched upon is the fact that the masses have bad taste. I have seen many bands (I don't follow authors well enough to know when/if they sell out) that have become mainstream, and as a result, or in order to do so, the quality of their music declines. I can think of a dozen bands that I don't listen to anymore, not because they sold out, but because they sound bad. The point Eggers never made is that people who sell out often sound bad, and that is not good.

If I ever get the opportunity to sell out, I'll take it.
