I have a random question for you ...
My friend is starting a company and she wants me to make her business cards. I'm just wondering, what is the copyright situation when it comes to using images from the internet? If they're on Google Images, can I use them? Anyone know?

All of the images on Google come from other sites, so in most cases you would have to ask the original site owners. It would help if you could provide more information. What kind of images?

That sounds like the kind of thing you'd use stock photos for. Stock photos are usually general scenes like that. Sometimes they cost money, but there are quite a few free stock photo sites if you google it. I'd recommend that over using Google images, because unless you're sure the pictures you used were free, you probably need to ask permission to use them.

Ah, thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate it. I'll look into stock photos. If anyone else knows any specific details about the rules on using images, please let me know.

Beeing a sly dog, like I am, I wouldn't really worry about it. It's a business card, not pictures used on national television for advertisement. Personally, I would just use it knowing theres a 99.99999% chance that they will never find out.

There are enough free images around you shouldn't take the risk - if the tiny percentage comes off, your friend could lose the business in court costs.
Also note that the best business cards are ones that are clear & simple. ie. you may be better off with a good clipart than a photo.
trial it, print off a few of the designs you come up with & hand them to people having asked who the company/person is & see how long it takes them to find out. Then ask what the phone number or email address is & time it again. The quicker, the better the design.
One of the most annoying things with cards is the trend to put a photo entirely on one side & all the other info on the back - no writing room for extra info. Business cards are often used for impromtu notes that remind the recipient about the subject or why they have the card.

Another possibility would be to have your friend pay you to design a logo for the gym, or if it already has one, use that.
