I do not know what to classify my writting style as!

I used to write poetry for 5 years, then moved on to short stories. Poetry seemed too concise while short stories still seemed too long. I began to write sub 700 word 'short stories' with the visual censory of poetry with immense use of detail, metaphors, similies, and adjectives... it was almost like 'free form poetry in motion through paragraphs'

I've been told short stories don't need this much imagery as it goes against the 'rules' , and poetry cannot be at this length. I don't know what to call it? Is it still a short story, but is it a 'good' short story or a 'bad' poetry piece (minus the rules of construction from each).

Someone help me!

I would say it's lyrical short fiction, if I had to go by existing terms.
Don't worry about people's 'criteria' on what constitutes a short story or a poem. Worry about fitting it into a box later. Just focus on it free from those worries.

As to the person who told you poetry cannot be that length, please ask them what they consider 'Paradise Lost' to be.

In comparison to short fiction and flash fiction, are they generally the same? To my knowledge flash fiction is generally concise short stories without much use of adjectives, metaphors, and similies ( similies being the heart and soul of poetry).

If they are the same, then would it still not be in the same genre then even though the length is what flash fiction calls for?

Also, when you ehance the statement of 'short fiction' with 'lyrical' , I always assumed 'lyrical' implies song writting. Could you explain it for me?

If I had to make up a genre or a name for this style of writting, it would be porety in motion or a poetic short story. That is what I am trying to classify my work as, but in an existing genre closest to it.

Brautigan also wrote novels and all of his work had a strong poetic style to it. He was the best fiction writer of the hippy generation.
This gives me much inspiration and I will check out this book for sure next time I stop at the book store . btw, would you mind skimming through the link of the 'Short Fiction' piece that I had written to tell me what you believe it is considered as to you? Poetic Prose... or Short Story?
