Question about New Posts Section.
How often does the New Posts section refresh itself? One second it has 678 posts, and the next it has 2. I was just wondering.

Aye. I have no idea. I know it resets whenever you log out or quit the browser (on Macs). Past that I'd estimate every two or three hours.

What's likely happened is you've been idle on the site long enough for it to log you out, then when you click something, your browser resupplies the login info automatically & the new posts gets refreshed to those that are new since you got logged out by the site.
When regularly checking posts, so the site doesn't log me out, the numbers just keep building.
Hope that helps.

^What journyman said. It is only reset when you log out. I believe that the site logs you out automatically in about an hour, but that might be a browser setting.

Nah, I don't think so. Because I never even log in; I keep this site in my Favorites List on the computer, so when I click it in my favorites I'm always logged in. Also, when I press the refresh button on my computer, it updates the latest posts, but sometimes it keeps the New Posts number the same, and sometimes it's back to 0.

Having the site on your favourite list isn't enough to keep you logged in. Every time you open WF, you're logging in. Once, in, it gets refreshed periodically, depending on your browsing actions.
Figuring out when excatly you're refreshing is probably just academic.

OK, all that means is the login process is being handled on auto by your browser. The log off & logon is occurring when you next click on a forum/post link. But in the meantime, you've been logged out at the site end, so the count is refreshed.

I know I can't. I'm sure Chrispian or Spudley are aware of the mysteries of running a site.

The new posts list does that to me as well occasionally. Not often, but it is a pain when it happens.
In effect, what has happened is that your session (ie the connection between the browser and the web server) has been interrupted.
This can happen if you close the browser and then re-open it, or if you leave it alone for a while without clicking on any links (I'm not certain of the exact timeout... it's probably about 20 minutes). But it also occasionally happens out of the blue for no apparent reason.
(There are a couple of technical explanations I can think of that might explain it, but nothing I could explain here without breaking into geek speak )
When it happens to me, I just switch to the recent posts list. It's not quite as good, but it suffices on the odd occasion that I need it.

Thanks for the reply, Spudley. That satisfies my curiosity!
