World Championships in Athletics - Helsinki

Have you been following the championships? I am always excited when I get to cheer for my compatriots and since the games are held about ten kilometres from where I live the excitement is even greater. I haven't yet been near the stadium but I intend to go and feel the atmosphere some day.

Tomorrow is a big day for Finnish fans. Our number one title candidate, javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki, gets to to show the world what he can do. He has thrown twice over 90m this season his best being 91.53m. Javelin throw is almost our national sport, we have won the title I think seven times in the Olympics (men+women) and a couple of times in the world champs. If Tero wins, it doesn't matter that we probably won't get any other medals. Javelin gold would be enough to drive us crazy!

The final starts at 20.20 local time and I get to leave work at about 20.10. I'll take a radio with me and run the way home from the subway. I'll probably be the only person on the streets at that time

If you watched the games today you got to see what nature had in store. The events were cancelled for about two hours because of torrential rain and thundering. They even had to cut off the power from the stadium to prevent accidents. Well, this kind of things happen (though not very often).

I thought the rain provided a nice funny moment, when it briefly slackened & a couple of over-eager grounds guys got out the super-sopper & started trying to soak up the excess... just as the heavens opened & dumped rivers of water on them.
Can you imagine just how fast the SS would have filled?

Unfortunately I didn't get to see much as it was on very late here.

I caught most of this on the satellite.

I was impressed with a lot of the events and competitors.
