Writing Instruments

I was thinking of investing in a fountain pen and would like to have some input on it. I would probably get a cheapish one at first (I saw a decent looking one for $30) in order to see if they are worth if over the traditional pen, and get a nicer one ($100-$300) later on down the road.

I would like to know a little bit more about them before I make a purchase. I have a notebook computer, but I have come to find out that I generally prefer to write out my thoughts in a journal--as it is both easier to carry around, and more flexible as note-taking device.

The pen I am using now is a Pilot G2 gel pen, seen here: http://www.pilotpen.us/detail.asp?PenID=7. It is a fairly reliable pen that writes smooth, dries incredibly fast, and is a fine point.

My mother said that fountain pens smudge easy, which is a big problem I have with most pens (more than most people). I would need to get an ink that doesn't smudge. I also notice that the tips look quite sharp, and I tend to press fairly hard.

I've had a couple and they're fairly reliable. They feel very nice to write with, as long as the one you get has a nice grip. They do smudge if you were to wipe over them with something, but the ink dries quite quickly. The only thing you need to worry about is the quality of the paper you're writing on. Low-quality paper tends to cause the ink to blot, which will happen on most paper if you leave the pen in the same place too long. I reccomend buying a cheaper one to try out before going for a decent one.

I use Pilot G2's as well. I've read a book that suggested buying a great pen, one's personal sword, and I went looking, but didn't find one I liked at the time. Thinking about it though, I find that I write so little with pen and paper, and when I do, I often use a mix of pencil and pen. I never write stories with pen, only ideas and outlines and genealogies and stuff.

My favorite has always been the Bic Ballpoint pictured here. Not very glamorous perhaps, but to each his own. Sorry, I don't know that much about those you are interested in.

I use the first pen I find. But I don't like writing with pen and paper anyway.
