FanFiction...(and why it keeps haunting me)
When I was younger, I use to write TONS of fanfiction. That's when I didn't have a brain, so when I read one of my friends fan fics (THEY FORCE ME TO READ IT!)... I don't exactly know what to say... I can only shudder and nit pick at it. Exactly what should I do? I don't really want to smash FanFics... especially because I'm her BETA. -Ioas

I started off with fanfic so I feel your pain. Kindly suggest they try something of their own imaginings. Honestly, I couldn't stand to fanfic for too long because I had my own ideas running around in my head. If they don't like that idea, maybe get them started by suggesting their favorite characters from one book meet their favorite characters from another book.

Ahh, but what happens if the persist to write HARRY POTTER FANFICS! Those are the worst... I know I wrote them for 3 frigging years... Sadly I'll never get those years back.

i got banned (well, the forum suggested i leave) from writing harry potter fanfics for being too contraversial...i kept putting Harry and the gang in situations that i found funny but apparently other people didnt...
basically i made it so Harry accidentally caused the magical world to get exposed and all wizards were stripped of their wands. 10 years later on and Harry's a 'clean-up' guy for some back-alley wizards, Fred and George are selling magical supplies behind their sweet-shop front, Ron's a drunk and Hermione will do anything for a scoop for the failing wizard newspaper (name escapes me, the one Rita Skeeter worked for).
I must admit i never really liked Harry Potter but i keep reading it in morbid fascination of who's going to die next. So when i did this fanfic i got a lot of people angry.
i dont know what's happened to it now...
anyways back to you. I think there's always something to salvage from a fanfic to put into your own work - pieces of dialogue, descriptions, new characters, set-pieces and stunts etc. Never just chuck it away, ideas need to be recycled to keep the fiction environment healthy.

I wrote this one fanfic that made fun of Fan Fic's themselves... and is so raunchy. It was bad potty humor. I haven't got banned yet off of FanFiction.com but I'm positive if I keep on leaving flames for reveiws some one will report me. I find it funny, I can sit at my computer and go through FanFiction and just pick out the most horrible stories ever reveiw them and be as nice as possible (which isn't saying alot.) That's about the only use FanFiction is for me. I got to hand for you... I like your non-wand idea. Pure FF talent there.

yeah it was fun, but it wasn't nice being excommunicated from the FanFiction Vatican for being a radical...although i've found truer meaning and enlightenment here.

Cool, that's how most of my novels are... I can never finish them. I don't excatly enjoy parting with my characters.

fanfic is a matter of taste really. You can get some real gems and then you can get some utter crap.
I'm not ashamed to say that I'm partial to X Files fanfic (seeing as I'm an avid viewer....) so I've read quite a bit. I enjoy most of it, even if it is worthy of a jaw-breaking cringe. I've even got one of my own in the workings (but it will not be shown on here ).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that no matter how ... shameful? fanfic can be, its a hell of a lot of fun. And theres also nothing wrong with innovation. Even if it is putting Harry Potter into some nasty scrapes.

Putting Harry Potter in nasty scarpes is the greatest thing I ever did with FanFiction, it's the only thing enjoyable about it.

yeah i find that because you get no satisfaction from writing in a similar vein to the author, because if the author ever saw it they'd just say 'so? I could have written that. You've just copied me.' If I ever became an author i'd shun such activity...but i'd commend people who managed to give an interesting twist to my yarn (shortly before trying to sue them).

Yeah, I'm astonished some authors allow such things. I swear I would sued someone. I remember I went insane because someone had a SIMILAR title of a novel to one of my short stories. I went insane and ran around the book store looking for my friend freaking out. It was hilarious for my friend, but I still don't think it's funny.

I came here from a gaming/fan-fic forum a while. I returned not long ago, but left again. I don't really like fan-fiction all that much. It could be good, but most of it seems to be stupid little fan-fictions about Harry and Ginny or something like that. I don't know, maybe I'm just making an unwarranted, sweeping generalization.
The FFF I was part of was pretty good though, as we had parody just as often as "serious" (if there is such a thing in FF...) stuff.

Well, sounds like you're not in an easy situation. You don't want to tell her that what she write is rubbish. Hmm... maybe you could tell her something along the lines of: wow, you're so good at fan fics, maybe you're now ready to actually write a proper story (of course not using those words ).
Otherwise... I guess just try not to nitpick too much. Just tell her what you like about it and then see if there is one thing that's particularly bad or if there is one thing you think you can tell her that will improve her fan fic and leave it at that.
Sorry, I'm not much help really... but I can imagine it's difficult cause you don't want to hurt your friend's feelings.
