I think it's isn't 1. Because it's smaller than 1. *shrug*

It would only be 1 if you were to round up by any digit...if you do not round at all and use the exact number, it would equal .999 just with the line on top.

Actually, I changed my mind. A friend of mine showed me a proof:
let k = .999999....
k = (10k-k)/9 [since 9k/9 = k. Pretty self-explanatory]
k = (9.9999..... - .999999....)/9
k = (9)/9 = 1
Tadaa! (It works because the decimal repeats forever in both 10k and k. )

I learned it as:
x=.9...
10x=9.9...
10x-x=9
9x/9=9/9
but pretty much the same thing.
This was actually a test, to compare this forum to another forum I frequented. On this particular forum though, the discussion resulted in mass flaming, banning, and an addition to the rules prohibiting any topics on this apparently touchy subject.
Anyway, this forum seems to have passed. Congrats.

It was the Battle.net forums, actually. The sticky prohibitting that ban on the topic has disappeared long ago, and the tale of ".9...=1" has passed into legend. However, the topic is still amoung the greatest of taboos. Any that bring the topic up on Battle.net do so at their own peril, as they will be flamed mercilessly.

Wow, that is crazy. I can't imagine that question starting a flame war.

Well, the issue being brought up is how close to nothing something can be before it can be considered nothing. Which can then lead to such issues such as the importance of an individual life in the grand scheme of things, or a discussion of what infinity is, which could ultimately become a full-blown debate about the existence of God.
Actually, that was just a load of BS . Sadly, though, I can almost see it happening.

But isn't 0.999... infinitely less than 1? Even infinitely less is less.

No. The mathematical proof says it all, and there is no logical reason to believe otherwise.
The ones who have trouble accepting the proof generally exhibit an ignorance of mathematics. Well, not their fault for not knowing better. Like this one guy who claimed pi was a rational number, or creationists (in this case, a lack of knowledge in pretty much every natural science rather than math), but that's another story for another flame war.

Does 1.999... = 2?
Does 0.333... = 0.4?

0.999... = 1
Therefore
1.999... = 1 + 0.999... = 1 + 1 = 2
-------------------------------
If you divide 1 by 3, you get those endless 3's.
Thus 1/3 = 0.333...
Obviously, then
0.333... = 1/3
-------------------------------
(Why on earth would 0.333... be 0.4? )
People who do not get this concept of infinitesimal differences probably aren't cut out for calculus of any kind, and should maybe stick to the liberal arts.
