The whole contriversial book topic

Religion is something that people argue about a lot. I'm writing a book with religious elements in it named Faith in Fringes -- (of course when people write about Heaven and Hell there has to be a bit of religion in it, or somewhere along those lines...) and it's really annoying how people automatically slap the label "WUSSY GOD STORY - LAME-O" and don't even bother to look inside. I don't know if they're just closed minded about the whole topic, but I've gotten past remarks (not on this forum, but from many other people) like that. I just want to point out that it's not like it's a "Christian" story...you know, I even think it's far from one. And adding on to that, nobody said much about the Da Vinci Code...but it wasn't meant to be a "Christian" book in the first place.

I don't know if it's practically unavoidable or I'll just have to live with those people, but I really don't know what to do about it anymore. I'm not changing my story just for them. What do you think ?

Don't worry about it. If you are trying to become a commercial writer, religion sells: http://www.nbc10.com/news/4287825/detail.html

Don't change it. I read and write stuff that's very firmly in the transgressive genre. Controversy is something the genre's used of.

It's bashed a fair bit for being against religion, against gays, against women and just about everything else... but what's funny is people just never get the joke. In fact it's probably the most accepting genre of all, preaching against the white, conservative, middle-class male ideal.

Go right ahead. If someone has a cry when they read your book, well, that's their problem. A bit of challenging a common belief system never hurt anyone.

fyi, the title, 'the da vinci code' doesn't connect in any way to god or religion... just to a well-known artist/sculptor and a secret... so, that's not a good comparison to make with yours, which DOES have the word 'faith' in it, right?...

only the promotional blurbs and reviews for brown's book referred to the religious angle... so, if you'd accompany your title with a non-god-related blurb, maybe it wouldn't attract so much flak... just a suggestion...

Good point, mammamaia. I'll probably do that....oh well I guess people have their problems with that kind of topic. They'll live, and I won't stop writing about it.
