Heres mine, I did htis off the top of my head pretty much. Didnt want to over think it
My reasons are pretty incoherent though.
17. City of God-I love the style and filmography. If I ddint watch the movie at 1 am I may have enjoyed it more
16. Fight Club- I guess I need to watch it more. I still don't get it. Love the style. Also Chuck Palhunuik is a awesome writer.
15. Momento-Just a very creative movie.
14. Usual Suspects-Same as above.
13. Eternal Sunshine-Best movie by Charely Kaufman by far. I only saw Inisde John Malkavich and Adaptation. Not sure if he had other movies.
12. Boogie Nights-Long as hell or it would be higher up.
11. Donnie Darko-Really cool music and that scene when he enters the school for the first time, make it great to me. PLus the rabbit. Some of it didn't make sense though.
10. Royal Tenenbaums- I am a big fan of Wes ANderson. I tried writing a story in that style, but it turned out ok so far. I am stuck on the second section. Cant go wrong with his music either.
9. Resovoir Dogs- My favorite taranitino movie. I loved the opening scene when htere are in the diner. Just pure geniuos and the scene with the ear.
8. La Confidential-I loved this movie. I should have put it higher up.
7. Bottle Rocket-Big Fan of Wes Anderson and his style of Comedy.
6. Traffic-Great the first time. Second time I didn't like it as much.
5. Rounders-By far the movie I watch the most. Most of the ohter movies I've watched once or twice. And usually on the repeat watch they don't have that same hold on me.
4. Good Will Hunting- Another one of those that I just didn't know what I was getting into and it turned out incredible.
3. American History X-The ending gave me the creeps. So Unexpected but I felt really bad for hte kid. And thats what made it good for me.
2. Requiem for a Dream-I didn't know what to expect when I saw this and I just got really into this movie.
1. American Beauty-This movie made me go WOW after I saw it the first time.

This isn't in order, because that would be too hard and I'm sleepy. Also, my list tends to change, so this isn't my definite top twenty (heck, I don't even have a definite top five).
Goodfellas
Incredible film with superb performances and great directing.
The Exorcist
My favourite horror movie of all time. It's disturbing, chilling and relentlessly horrific, which I find lacking in today's scary movies.
Alien
A suspenseful, haunted ship flick. The first forty minutes or so is completely unsettling and creepy, and the last act is terrifying.
Aliens
I like Alien better, but this is still great, and arguably more fun.
Chinatown
The scene where Faye Dunaway reveals the nature of her relationship with her father is one of the best written (and acted) scenes I've ever seen. Oh and the rest of the movie is great too.
Seven
Great visuals, great performances, great script, killer ending, perhaps my favourite ending of all time.
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
Easily the best of the trilogy, and one of the best epic, fantasy films I've ever seen. Movies like this are why I love movies.
Toy Story 2
My favourite Pixar film (although The Incredibles and Finding Nemo come close). Toy Story 2 wins because of its hilarious and inventive set pieces, and Woody's character arc which is both poignant and truthful.
Star Wars A New Hope
Like Return of the King, this movie is why I love movies. I also like the Empire Strikes Back, but A New Hope is more exciting.
Aladdin
My favourite Disney movie. Plenty of adventure, some great songs, a cool villain, and the genie.
Spirited Away
My favourite Miyazaki movie. Original. Magical. Loveable.
The Silence of the Lambs
If only for the scenes between Lector and Starling.
Psycho
Relentless in its suspense, even though Norman Bates doesn't show up until half an hour into the movie. This makes excellent use of visuals and music, reminding us how powerful it can be over dialogue.
Batman Returns
While it's certainly very flawed (not enough Batman), this is one of those movies I continually watched as a kid, and I still love it, like most of Tim Burton's works. If I was less biased, then I'd probably replace this with Spider-man 2.
Adaptation
Brave (on Kauffman's part), original, funny, and clever.
Raging Bull
Another Scorcese masterpiece. Robert DeNiro goes through such incredible physical transformations in this movie.
The Truth About Cats and Dogs
Despite its major flaws, I find this movie to be very funny, mainly due to Jeneane Garofalo.
Schindler's List
Very good. Very brutal. Magnificent.
The Matrix
Just great. Amazing, innovative special effects and fight scenes mixed in with classic storytelling, bundled together as something unforgettable.
American Beauty
One of those movies that just hooks you, and will make you stay until the end despite how late you entered in.

OKay,
I like Sci-fi and Action movies and movies like Pulp Fiction but they mean absolutely nothing to me in real terms. I only find them mildly entertaining cos I'm all about the tear jerker.
The Colour Purple
The Piano
The Lord of the Rings
Horseman on the Roof (French)
Some Like it Hot
Interview With a Vampire
Dangerous Liasons
Being John Malkovich
Hideous Kinky
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Okay so I'm boring!

I've got to agree with you on Fight Club.
I really expected to hate it, because I usually don't like watching literary adaptation movies after reading the book first. But Fincher, Norton Bonham Carter and of course, Pitt proved me very wrong.

Vanilla Sky is just a rip-off of Jacob's Ladder.
And Tim Robbins beats Tom Cruise any day.
