Last Minute Stay of Execution for Troy Davis
Supreme Court Issues Stay of Execution for Davis
Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a police officer and was senteced to death. This is the second time now that his execution has been stayed.
7 out of the 9 key witnesses for the prosecution have recanted their testimony against him saying that the police cooerced them, and yet Georgia's courts don't see that as a ground to schedule a new trial or court hearing to present new evidence.
Oh no wait, I got that wrong, they did scheduled a hearing, but it was for six days after his execution.
This case has attracted so much world attention, even Pope Benedict has written letters pleading his case along with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the European Union, the European Council, the European Parliment, Amnesty International, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and countless numbers of politicians and organizations around the world.
This case just flies in the face of any kind of justice.
What is with these Southern States? Why are their justice systems so backward?

Seems to me the death penalty shouldn't be on the table at all. With so much unsurity, I really don't want to risk being responsible for killing an innocent man. And, yes, each time the government kills a person, we're all killing that person.

Glad you think so Malone. With this case, the Georgian courts are more or less saying "He could well be innocent, but as we have no frame within which to retry this case, he'll have to die anyway". It's unbelievable.
He's been in prison since 1989 for a crime he probably didn't commit, and even if he's found innocent, he'll probably receive no reparations for his incarceration.

I think the death-penalty is too good for people who commit serious crimes. (Not saying this guy did or didn't). I think they should be made rot in prison for thirty-plus years. That's more punishment than the death-penalty.

You would think so. I tend to think that a country's position on the death penalty is an indicator of where the society is at in terms of development. America is the only first world country that has the death penalty.

What do you mean "You would think so," Joanna? I don't really care what America is the first country to do. Doesn't mean the rest of the world needs to follow suit.
The death-penalty is an easy way out for people. Put them in a prison for thirty years, where they get beaten every day, and that would be the more applicable thing to do.

A cousin of mine, who's lived in America his entire life, came home a few months ago. I was in my room, listening to my iPod when he came in. Do you know what he said to me? "You guys get iPods over here?" I wanted to slap his overweight, fat ass all the way back to America. It was almost as though he thought Irish people were living in poverty or something. A lot of people over here have a stereotypical view of Americans - That they're loudmouths with a blinkered view to everything other than their beloved US of A. This guy was giving that view massive credence.

I think there's been a misunderstanding. When I said "You would think so", I was responding to your statement that the "death-penalty is an easy way out", and that spending life in jail is actually more of a punishment. You would think so right?
When I refered to America as "First World", I meant as opposed to "Third World". America is the only advanced Western country that has the death penalty. I didn't say anything about anyone else following suit.

This was surely a joke, and your prejudicial views prevented you from getting it. Of course the Irish can go holiday in London and come back with ipods.

Don't be facetious. If you were an innocent person held in prison for 20 years, 20 years of your life stolen, wouldn't you feel you were owed something?
