The lack of draconian moderation and the outright refusal to host erotic/fanfic/etc. This isn't the first site I've been to where I was told that my writing sucked, but it's the first one I've been to where that was coupled with some genuine constructive feedback. The 'long haulers' are also more numerous here; generally there are only a handful of veterans at any given site, but it seems like half of the people who post here have been around for years. Alliances and cliques are established; you never have to wonder about whether or not an opinion is skewed.

In a marketable nutshell: Plush moderation and wise old bastards.

I haven't posted any writing here for a very long time. I stick around because this was my first and I enjoy the community, even if most of the people I was friends with originally seem to have moved on. Oh, and also because of Non Serviam and Mike C. My favorite mods ever.

I do reviews only on another site, and post only on a third. Then I have one for writing and reserach questions. Here, I've fallen mostly into the Lounge. Workshop scares me, and I don't post much prose online.

The only thing I dislike about this site is when it's down, and that's almost never (now at least), so everything is good.

Love the Workshop here; helped me out alot (just like Tiamat I cringe at some of my earlier stuff) and it also gives me a chance to read something new everyday without having to go buy a book or borrow one from the library. I still visit the Critique and Advice section sometimes to brush up on my critiquing skills and to help out the new writers (although I'm no published author so most of my advice is with sentence structure and things that sound wrong to my ear) just like some of the old veterans helped me when I started out.

Sometimes I like to post in the Lounge, but most of the time I don't have the time.

In a nutshell, draconian means strict, severe, unfair, with a cruel tint to it. Usually used to describe a ruling power.

I like the crowd here and the moderation level. I'm just looking for places to hang out and unwind and have a good time. None of the critique stuff means much to me. Some sites are about little else.

A year ago I liked the fact that there was a high percentage of people with real writing experience here, and some life ballast. But many have drifted away, replaced by floods of high schoool kids. It's changed. But it's still, as Baron once said, a community. Other sites don't really give that feeling.

I'm active on Zoetrope. Was VERY active there for about a year until I wasn't learning anything about screenwriting anymore.

I also hang at sites where the main emphasis is self-publishing, promotion, selling/agenting, etc.

And there are several forums I'm on that require professional credentials, proven track record, guild memberships, etc. Nobody ever talks about writing on them.

If Selorian is fishing for what would be cool to have here, I don't know... it's a structural mess, but I don't think that can be changed without damaging things.

It's find like it is... which is why I keep killing time here, I suppose.

The moderation's a big plus, I've had trouble with nasty mods on other sites. The community here's fairly intelligent and helpful as a whole, though oftentimes too sarcastic for their own good.

To an extent, I was fishing. It's always nice to have ideas to mull over to see what would make us better for our members. For the most part I agree though, while adding a few things would be fine, changing things too much from the present layout would be disastrous.

I came here the same way Sam did, by Googling "writing forums". Looked at quite a number of them, lurked for awhile, and only joined two. This is the only one I post to on a regular basis.
Critique isn't really my interest, though I do read the works posted and sometimes get involved. I'm a member of a couple of offline writing groups and have been for years, and face-to-face shredding works better for me. I just missed the type of camaraderie that existed at the defunct pay-per-click writing sites, especially the Vines, where I met a number of people that have become lifelong friends. That's better than the thousands of dollars that the Vines, WrittenByMe, and Themestream owe me that I'll never see.
The reasonable moderator culture is fine, and I like most of the folks here. So far I've stayed longer than at most other forums.
