Oh, knew a few guys in high school with the last names of Bates and Bater. Both took German and became Master Bates and Master Bater.
Also, my f-i-l Had the unfortunate last name of Tester and joined the Navy to become Seaman Tester. When my husband decided to join, we realized the Air Force was the only branch that wouldn't make him and Seaman Tester or a Private Tester. thus, he's now a Sr. Airman Tester.
