I used Rosetta Stone for Spanish, and it is amazingly helpful. Clears up stuff I never understood before quite easily.
I'm going to try Russian next, just because I've always been interested in speaking that, and with this new cold war brewing up, maybe I can be a spy.

Fantastic. I have several languages I want to learn, but really did not want to try to learn them at the local community college. I might have to add Russian to the list with all this talk of spies though. . .

Oh, thank God. Malone's changed his avatar.

Thanks, pal.

What was wrong with his old one. It was Christian Bale right?

I got this one on a mycology forum, and the guy was yelling at me about narrowing down my IDs before eating the shrooms, so I told him I would steal his badass Bukowski avatar.

Oh, it was Bale in Psycho. I was just laughing at Joseph. If I knew it bothered him that much I would have changed it before.

I don't think it'll help in writing.

I think the reference here to Chinese is great. If any of you do know it, you'll realise that Chinese poetry and idioms are some of the most complex to understand. They have few words, yet words that mean incredible things. Ancient greek is also somewhat similar.

But understanding it and using it as an idea in writing are 2 completely different things.

There's a saying in cantonese - pat chi so wai and in no way am I able to explain it's uses and meanings in any form of English. So how am I going to write that down...

Both my parents are bilingual in English and Urdu, I feel slightly jealous of them since I only speak English fully, with a little Urdu, German and French. If I was bilingual, it may well assist my writing.

Rosetta Stone is an all audio course, yeah? I used Pimsleur Spanish I as an intro to the language, which was good in getting me to think without translating and I think I got the pronunciation down pretty well. But I started getting frustrated at about lesson 25 (of 30), since they're pretty slow and the gaps can either be too long or short.

I've been really interested in learning Russian, too. Just a little while ago I ordered 'Ultimate Russian' from amazon. It arrived a week or so ago but I need to go and get the cds from the library before I start.

As for the original topic, yeah, I think bilingualism could definitely help with writing, but maybe only because when you learn another language you begin to have a better understanding of the grammar of your own language. Once you know the language in more intimate detail, then you can really start playing around with things.
