Internet Sucks

I'd be a lot less social if it weren't for the internet. I always assume I can be myself without being judged, etc. The internet's really one large playground, but I hate it. It's just more socialization, now right into my house. Even online, I feel stupid and not needed. I was better off before, with a book and my bed. I hate society - it's just a huge competition, of people preying on each other. If I even venture out of the poetry section, or disagree with someone, it's all out war. I suck at arguing. This is true. I think I quit the internet, as well as this mysterious "hanging out" I never understood. How many of you guys come online merely to socialize? I mean, there's a point where it's not for critique, but for fun - and fun usually includes human interaction.

Hilarious. Really, really intellectually stimulating there, Seven. Thank you so much for digging deep inside of your mind and dragging that well thought reply out for us.

I never liked spiderman.

Damien, do you work? If you're as much a recluse as you claim yourself to be, then getting out and mingling with co-workers could do wonders. A young girl - timid, shy, kept to herself - was hired on at the library awhile back. We warmed up to her, she warmed up to us, and she's a garrulous joy. I'm not sure of her confidence outside of the library, but with us she's fine.

That said, I too hate hanging out with others. When I'm invited somewhere, I decline, as I don't mind being an entertainer, but refuse to be entertained (parties, going to "gigs," etc.). Still, work is the best place to learn to better conduct yourself.

For the past 3 years I have been moving about the country for jobs where making friends isn't an option. Before I moved I was incredibly social, so it has not been an easy transition. I completely understand using the internet as a means to "hang out". WoW on the weekends, forums during the week. I do get annoyed with the all out war effect of voicing an opinion.

Seven is just trolling, I assume. He's not usually this much of a dick.

He's also seventeen.

Of late this site is inconsequential to my writing -- in fact a downright distraction -- although it's obviously not very rich on social interaction, more of an intellectual playground I suppose. No, an intellectual battleground. Still I prefer that for some things.

Damien, I think it's a kinda funny. Here you are wanting to complain about the internet, so what form do you use? Talk to friends? Write to newspapers? TV? Nope, you use the internet? No offense, but you do see the irony in that?

But I know what you are talking about. Society is one big battleground where either become popular or forgotten, and the internet is no exception. Many say the internet is safe because we hide behind a nickname, but that's only half the truth. Sure we hide behind a nickname, but if we stay on a forum for some time, someone will recognize it as some point. I don't know you at all in real life, but I do know quite a bit about who you are simply since I recognize your username from various posts.

My point is it can be though to get friends and be heard in any society, and no matter how we put it, the nicknames we see on a forum like this belong to real people. We are the same people you meet in real life (not literally, of course), but the difference is you can take your time when you are online and join the crowd as quickly or slowly as you please. And while it seems pointless at times as there are no "human interaction", it depends on what you mean. Sure we don't often meet the other person in real life, but have happened. People have even gotten married after meeting on the internet.

If you keep talking to someone for some time, someone will talk back sooner or later. And sure you probably won't meet in real life, but does that make it less "human interaction"? It is a real human being you are talking to, after all.

I'd die without the internet. i don't know how i functioned before it. I live in Kiev with no friends (good thing I can take a lot of my husband), so the net is what keeps me in touch with my family, friends, and the world. I submit writing here occasionally for critique, but mostly I'm here for the conversation.

And Damien, you're not stupid and unneeded. I can see a number of people here enjoy having you around.

It is hard for me to imagine how long it must have taken people to access answers to questions when they were curious about something, before the internet.
