Unfortunately, that is quite true. The show would only attract other writers and little else. Unless of course they were writing the script for a new movie, or a new show that would be put on air afterwards. But even then...

How about a show in where a handful of contestants are kidnapped from their homes and forced to compete in cruel and unusual writing challenges (like writing papers on the many ways of dismemberment, and then having it performed on themselves). If they write bad, a machine could spray acid on their face. If they write good, another one of their precious family members could run free.
And at the end of each episode, the least talented writer would be kicked off the island... and forced to swim back to the mainland through shark-infested waters...

JHB, you are not related to lin, are you? That sounds like something he could have come up with.

You wouldn't get real writers on the show because you'd have to get trashy people to get the Jerry Springer effect people watch reality shows for. While writers can be very interesting people, we're not all Malones and Lins who have exciting lives and/or volatile temperaments to make for 'pleasant' viewing.

But according to Family Guy, writers want to be watched when they're working - that's why I started hanging out in Starbucks with a lap top - to be a real writer... o_O

Well, as long as you're getting your info from a respected source like an animated show on Fox, you should go far. *wink*

Why not, they get real actors.
And who says "real writers" aren't trashy?

An interesting idea for a show, Nyk, but I'm afraid in actuality it would wind up pretty dull. As others have pointed out, writers often tend to be pretty dull people. Hard not to be when your head's always bent over a keyboard.
P.S. I like your Immortal avi.

It would be boring. No one would watch it. It would be kicked off the air.
I can see the drama in it now:
Contestant 1: Ugh, you're writing sucks. It's soo cliche`.
Contestant 2: Well at least I don't copy Tolkien.
Contestant 1: Ugh. Let me grab my dictionary so I can find the perfect comeback.
Or the tasks you got to do:
Host: Okay writers today's challenge is that you have to write a short story about a detective solving the perfect murder. You have one day.
Contestant 1: Uh, sir, I only write fantasy, so can the murderer be a wizard or dragon?
Contestant 3: I only write nonfiction.
Contestant 4: One day! How am I suppose to get my creative juices flowing?! You can't put a time limit on a masterpiece!
Host: Alright, alright. We'll do freestyle..... again.
