Norton let me down in Hulk, which ultimately made the movie less than its potential. The performances in Dark Night were good to great, and I enjoyed the Joker's insanity and Two-Face's moral dilemma to the Hulk's efforts at anger control.

Me I will give all the praise in the world to this movie, a GREAT follow up to Batman Begins.
I think The Dark Knight might possibly be better then any comic based film I have ever seen, seriously and I seen many comic films.
The Duality and tragedy of Harvey Dent did it for me in this film, its about time they did the character right again (Two face was horrible in Batman Forever, he was cheesy and wasted the talent of Tommy Lee Jones)
And the Joker... I think we have a winner here, Jack NicholsonsJoker was fine but heath Ledger blew him out of the water, what a hell of a last role
I Believe in Harvey Dent

It's a shame the fights scenes were as confusing as those in the first.
The Dark Knight and Spider Man 2 share the title of best hero flick, I'd say.

I meant the first Hulk.
Ang Lee's Hulk was slow, plodding, and ham-fisted, but it actually had a central message and a theme.
The Dark Knight was preposterous, superficial, and pretended to be serious, when it was not. I hate films that pretends to be serious, more than they try to be funny. That's why I prefer Batman Begins over this: it actually seemed to have a sense of direction. Nolan made the mistake of revolving his story around Gotham, and it's citizens, instead Batman's pysche--his character--and the sense that his life was slowly falling apart and coming unhinged, because that's who I'm interested in. Not fucking Gotham or the goddam mayor or DA. Who was Harvey Dent, anyway? Why was he acting like a retarded mayor? The lens was over Gotham, instead of Batman, and I couldn't give a flying fuck, because everyone felt like chess pieces for Joker's pawn, instead of real, live human beings. Not once did I feel threatened by Joker's antics. This film should've been about the death of regular citizens and their children through bombing and mass explosions, the anger in the community, the blaming of Batman for the atrocities--just as Bush was blamed for 9-11--and the lynching of Batman, at the start of the film. How society turns inward and against each other. Can Batman handle the pressure or will he give up the suit? Instead we have a "mad man" Joker, lacking any real reason and motivation, acting like a retard, creating plans to reveal the "despair" state of mankind when he's supposed to be a fucking anarchist--so I could care less what happens. There is no reason to care for Joker, or side with him, because he is devoid of human thoughts. Why does Joker do what he does? He's "insane"? Is that the only thing Nolan could come up with? Fucking embarrasing. He's "insane" whoop-de-doo. Why did the Virginia Tech Massacre happen? Cause he was "insane"? Joker was the opposite of horrifying. He's comedy. A true villian is someone we can identify to. A true villian shows us we're just like him, with similar goals and ambitions--with the same needs and wants.
And what the fuck was up with Batman knocking himself unconcious? What the fuck was that all about? Fucking embarrassing. Just when I thought the film was going in the right direction--Nolan had to kill it.
I didn't feel anything for Batman. He's lacked humanity in this film. He had no heart. Not once were we able to relate to his character. Not once did he even shed a tear. Not once did I feel or share his pain.
A disjointed, cobbled mess. This film was so pretentious, it made me puke. A propaganda film that insinuates the invading of Iraq was justified. It wasn't bad as The Happening, I admit, but it was still bad in that department.
From a B - to a C +. I give this movie a C + now, the more I reflect upon it.
Goddamn Nolan. F*** you.
What an overrated piece of trash.

What's funny is I agree with the majority of that diatribe. Batman lacked any depth, the pawns manipulated by Joker were cardboard cutouts, and Joker, the supposed "mad dog without any plans," happened to lay rings upon rings of explosives throughout the city.
I never considered the movie a deep film, but come on Truth, you have to admit that it was FUN as SHIT!
I love this movie.

As for the movie "pretending to be serious," did the director himself say that was what he intended? From what I recall of the movie, all the director seemed concerned with was providing the most visceral and enthralling experience of the summer, and in that regard Dark Knight delivers on all fronts.
It's the critics and fans that are turning it into a "symbolic movie." At least, this is how I see it.

To each their own, then. It's all in the execution, and this movie brought the bacon.

You have to go into it expecting that it's going to be a typical action blockbuster. And in that category, I think it delivered more than any other movie has. It was over two hours long, and I was extremely interested throughout. The Joker was scary because you had no idea what the hell he would do next. He was predictable only in that he was unpredictable. It was, as Seven said, fun.

It was the opposite of fun.
It was like the Hulk.
The first one.

I wish Salinger would allow a Catcher in the Rye film.
THAT would be deep. And awesome. And fun (Holden getting his ass kicked for ten dollars).

The first Hulk was NOTHING like the Dark Knight. It wasn't entertaining in the least. It was extremely slow in the beginning. There was no action or conflict whatsoever until about an hour into it. The Dark Knight was much better. Just the first scene slammed the audience with tension. And tension is fun.

Truth, what movies would you consider imperative to one's...um, viewing repertoire? To keep things simple, let's speak in action films, as that's all Dark Knight really was.
But for the fun of it, here's some movies I consider juggernauts of cinematic genius:
3:10 to Yuma
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Children of Men
The Departed
Infernal Affairs (The Departed was based off this)
Munich
United 93
NAMES, damn it, I need NAMES!
