I'd like 750 words, but the consensus will probably be 650, and that would be an improvement. Fine by me for both entering and judging. I tend to write longer, and though I know this is a challenge to be succinct, neither of my previous entries would have suffered for a few extra words. They might even have made sense, lol.

Raising the limit to 650 words would take away much of the challenge. 500 forces the writer to stay focused, to make every word carry its weight.

Might as well make it 400 words, then.

We've just completed a little exercise in Writing Discussions where a 62-word passage was reduced phrase by phrase and word by word until eventually the entire passage vanished off the page.

I was also being sarcastic. What I meant to say was - Shhhhhhhhh.

Garza - 650 words is a different type of challenge than 500. I don't think it takes away the fact that it's a challenge, and having judged a lot of these in recent times, I for one would be happy to see a little more. I don't think people should finely craft 500 words then tack 150 rambling ones at the end. No one says an entrant has to use all 650 words, and the judges have to read everything so you'd better believe we'll be expecting each word to count.

I believe there is a tweet-fiction challenge somewhere on the web, for those worshipping the minimalist essence.

Laurel resting is all very well but too much inervates the imagination. And this is a horrible bunch for losing momentum. It'll probably take another week to agree. I find these suggestions for the prompt:

    song into story
    finding a portal
    death on a beach
    treehouse blues
how to tear down a building

    Others?

    Probably at 650 words?

If anybody's volunteered to judge, you probably should remind us.

I personally like the portal one.

I like the portal one also. I thought we agreed on 650 words for the next challenge. I won't judge this one, maybe the one after though. That will depend on home life.

So lets all agree on a topic so that I can get started. I've got a sick kiddo so I have a lot of computer time coming up. All he wants to do is snuggle with mommy. Give me a glass of tea and my laptop and I'm good to go.

A portal theme sounds cool. I can imagine some Narnia type things being made. I'd like to participate, too, so won't be able to help judge this next one.
Let's see if my above post is deleted without explanation. Wouldn't be the first time.

Is everyone allowed to offer ideas for the next writing competition?

Yep. It's a community thing, so feel free to throw out your ideas.

How about "How to fake your own death"? I was thinking about doing that yesterday so I googled it. Found tons of interesting stuff. If it's not a challenge I'll probably write it anyways.

I like Song into Story and Discovering a Portal.

I really like the portal idea. Have I already said that? And I can judge again as necessary.

That sounds cool, but I'd go well over 500 words.

    Mirror on the Wall
    Cabin Fever
    The Queen of Ecclesia
    How to Hold a Grudge
    In the Jaws of Sleep
    Dearly Beloved
    Snakes on a Plane ()

    I have no idea lol.
