Nathan, I fought tooth and nail quite a while back for a higher word limit. I got 750 (or was it 800?). I asked for it for structural reasons. We were recreating fairytales. For a challenge based on a simple one line prompt I think you'll be hard pressed to convince anyone it needs to be higher. And if so, you need to convince the judges. If there's four judges willing to judge a higher word count then I guess you'll be in luck.

LAF - I hear you. I don't really have a decent argument other than it's difficult for me to write any kind of a story using 1000 words, let alone 500 words. I know my lack of skill is not a good reason.

Yeah I used to hate doing it too. Now I'm kind of addicted to 500 word stories. It makes me feel like I've written a lot more than I have.

Actually, it probably makes you a better writer. There is so much added fluff, that you can usually trim, if you just fight hard enough.

Last Bus To is going to be the next one, yes? The reason I'm asking is, I wrote another using one of the other prompts. Just for practice.

I'm finished Last Bus too but don't tell nobody. Bet you can't guess the word count on that one.

Real life has kicked my ass. Can't work on my novels. 500 words or so seems about right for my current attention span.

    "Inspector Morse" Promised Land (1991)

Well, you never know with all his 'Come In Spinner'.
He's expecting us to google "Morse" with "Australia".
    Seems a bit unfair.
