Hi folks...

Just want to say hello as I am new to this site. I've spent the past decade writing for an outdoors magazine and I am presently switching to action-fiction and sci-fi novels. It's been a daunting and rewarding process completing my first 140,000 word novel and it is currently in the hands of my editor...ouch! I have two more novels in progress; one is the first sci-fi sequel and the other is an action story about black-ops in Viet Nam in the late 60's.

I have many things to learn about being an author and I'm hoping to find some answers in this site. For example, after a manuscript becomes a book, how do I promote it? I understand that it's primarily the author's responsibility to create "buzz" about a new release....but how do new authors accomplish that?

In any case, I'm thankful that a site such as this exists and I look forward to meeting other authors.

Hi there NaCl

Your Vietnam "black ops" book sounds really interesting. I'd buy it. And I'm not too sure about authors doing that sort of thing, but I'm sure the others on here can help you.

Anyways, welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the Forums, NaCI!

I just joined yesterday for pretty much the same reasons as you. I am working on my first novel, also. My book is about my high school's coming-of-age experiences in 1958 Havana, Cuba: Havana Harvest...When Cuba was Naughty! This story takes place against the backdrop of Castro's Revolution.

I, unlike you, have only finished my book proposal and am about 3/4 way through chapter one of a ten chapter endeaver. So, I envy you your finished 140,000 plus word first novel! Good luck in this wonderful adventure!

Thank you all for your welcoming comments. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the choices on this site. There seems to be something for just about every topic associated with writing and I'm struggling with where to begin...LOL!

Johnaustin - my completed manuscript started the same way...i.e. with a book proposal and outline. Both the proposal and outline proved to be barriers for my writing as I kept trying to write within the constraints of the established theme. I finally tossed them aside and just let my fingers wander through the story and, in no time at all, the 21 chapter manuscript evolved. In fact, elements of the story grew well beyond my initial imagination in the original script. I don't claim that my method is right or wrong - just that it works for me and might work for others.

chimchimski - I was raised in Gainesville (at the University student housing) and in Jacksonville until my family moved north. I have fond memories of those years. We lived on Driftwood Road...not far from the beach.

Shinn - thank you for your encouragement on the black ops book. It is a blend of fact and fiction, carefully weaving imaginary characters through actual historic events of the time. I have allowed three people to read the introductory chapter and their comments are very encouraging. I have decided to complete this book by the end of this summer instead of finishing the sequel to the sci-fi story first. I only wish there were more hours in a day! LOL!

Again, nice meeting all of you.

"...ionic kind..." I get a charge out of that! (pardon the obvious pun)LOL!

You would be amazed at how many people do not know basic chemistry. Its amusing when I play internet poker tournaments as NaClmine or NaClshaker and, after an hour of playing, some genius suddenly figures it out.

Of course there is a little truth in your observation...I am only attracted to my opposites! HAR!
