Barkeep, a shot of writerly camraderie, please.
Hi everyone, I'm Livvy. I'm in the middle of some soul-searching right now. I've been planning for years to study mythology at the graduate level and then teach it. I'm really feeling unsure about that choice now. I think most of what drew me to mythology is symbol, story, language. I've always been a fanatical journalist and writer. Poetry, short stories, a novel. I've had the synopsis for the novel written for three or four year. I spend so much time focusing on details, writing character sketches or second-guessing choices I've made that my partner teases me I spend more time writing about my novel than actually writing it. In my own deliberate, dense way I've come to realize that I'm not writing because it's what's most important and identity-defining to me, and that frightens me. If I didn't succeed as a mythology professor I don't think it would be nearly the blow that not ever creating something I'm truly proud of would be. At the same time, not trying to write at all is equally unsatisfying. Over the past year or so I've become more and more convinced that what I really deep down need to do is to go get my MFA in Creative Writing. While I'm sorting all this out, I really need to be part of a community of writers somehow, so here I am. I think I'll post a poem this afternoon, but most likely other than that I'll just be hanging around to hear what others say for a while. I'm an observer from the fringes until I figure out where I fit into the group, so I'll be devouring your words before I get the courage to add too many of my own. Nice to meet you all!

Hello, Livvy, and let me be the first to welcome you to Writing Forums. I'm a lover of mythology too, although I don't write about it. Hope you enjoy your stay around here!
Sam.
