Hello!
Hello,
I've just started writing my first novel, which I'm really excited about. I've wanted to write one for ages but it's only recently that I've come up with an idea that's stuck.
Like most people, I guess, I'm also working full-time (not on the novel!) so I'm finding it hard to spend large chunks of time writing.
At the moment I think I've got most of my planning done (with a pen and paper) on the train on my way to work.
Now I really need to sit down at a computer and start writing. I'm bursting to get some words down as I'm really excited (did I already say that? ) about my plot and especially the main character. I'm just finding it sooo frustrating at the moment that I can't spend all day writing!
Does anyone else have these issues? I guess it's better than 'writer's block' though.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to joining in with the discussions
Ciao,
Lydia

Welcome to the forum Lydia, train journeys are great places to work, if you haven't got a key board you can take with you I found it worth writing long hand on the train and then typing it in when I got home, it gives you your first edit.
Make notes of any other ideas that occur to you but that you don't need right now, then if that dreaded "block" comes along you can drift off sideways for a bit and work on something different.
Joining in discussions can be very time consuming, giving crit. of someone else's work can help you think about what you are doing, and if you take people seriously they often return the favour.
Hope you keep that "must write" feeling, like any thing it comes and goes but when you have it it is the best!

Welcome. You're lucky to have a train ride to think and write on. I drove semi-truck several years ago, and that's where I got my start for writing stories. I'd take a tape recorder (that shows how long ago it was) with me and speak my stories into it as I drove along. Of course this also included non-story related comments as I told some other driver that his mother was a dog. When I got a chance I'd write the stories on a typewriter. The computer, especially the laptop has made writing so much easier.

Hi and welcome Lydia. I think your problem is one we all have. I personally like to write on my lunch hour.

Welcome.
Some people say you should work out right away when you wake up, so you do it, and know you will. Why not the same for writing?

Hi everyone - and thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I guess I should stop waiting for the ideal time and just get on with it. The train is quite a good time to write, providing I get a seat that is, especially in the morning and I find my thoughts are most focussed then. That's a good idea of writing with pen and paper and when I type it up I can edit it as I go along. I will definitely be trying that one out.
Thanks!
Lydia
