Does blogging really count as writing?

Since my attempts at getting published the traditional way have been miserable failures, I'm finally turning to blogs as a way to publish my work. I've got several: a blog for my sci-fi stories (I'm publishing "Alter Ego" right now serially), another for my attempt to write one poem every day in 2006, with a few "other" items thrown in for fun, and, finally, a blog about our new puppies Sasha Rose and Gimli, Son of Gloin.

My idea, dumb as it may seem, is to use the blogs as a way to practice writing and to try to generate interest. If it works, maybe I'll try to self-publish my first novel, The Eden Project, which I have completely abandoned as being saleable to a real publisher. I've moved on - now I'm writing a novel called The Legend of Charlie Snicklefritz.

But anyway, this all begs the question: does blogging really count as literature? Or is it just another vanity press?

Nickie is an unknown quantity at this point
Hello there, Davidray, and welcome to the forums! I really wouldn't know about these blogs. I think they are just there for fun - although some can make you some money (like Blogit).

Welcome to WF David! I would try everything amenable if I really believed my writing was like you said, "saleable" and want to generate interest to the reading public. But like Nicki said, some blogs are just for fun but you can learn a thing or two and build connections. Look forward to reading your work. Cheers!

In answer to your title question, I'd have to answer that blogging is probably more vanity than literary. The way you put it though, it just sounds like damn good practise. Good luck with it.

Welcome to the forum!
