Hi, new and bummed
Hi i'm a 19 year old Irish male writer with nothing published as of yet.
I decided to check out this forum today because I recieved my first rejection slip from Poolbeg press today and its brought me down more than I had anticipated, so instead of wallowing I've decided to mix in with other writers just to lessen the damage a little.
As for my writing I like making plots that are different to the norm but in whatever takes my fancy.
Basically i'm pretty desperate to get published because writings all i've ever been good at and to fail now would pretty much make me homeless, not to mention how difficult it is to get a job in Ireland now days especially considering that I live in a small town about forty miles from the closest city, with a shortage of bus routes and busses. Oh, not to mention that I have ADD, which dosent look to shiny on any CV equal rights or not.
So as you can imagine my income is pretty limited and sending manuscripts, coprighting and printing costs eat up whatever small change I have, in short I'm starting out on a pretty low footing.
That might sound depressing, maybe it is, but it makes for good motivation and pushes me to believe that I have to and will be published.
On a political note I would also like to further encourage European unity among the populace through my writing, maybe just on the side.
Also I eventually want to make movies, just to show those sell out hollywood directors how a real film is made.

Hey, CroZ, welcome from a fellow newcomer!
I'm working on my first work of fiction in ten years, and already dreading the rejection! Hang in there, it'll get better for ya!

caed mile failte, croz!
and congratulations on receiving your first rejection... may it not have much, if any company... realistically, of course, it probably will... but, if you have the patience it takes to write a whole book, i'm sure you'll weather the 'sorry!' storms in fine fettle... who was it said, 'that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger' or something along those lines?
i'm sure you'll find plenty of company here, to give you both comfort and encouragement... best of luck with your book/s... meanwhile, it might not hurt to find a paying job of some kind, to keep body and mind together... and, for heaven's sake, don't mention the ADD in your bio blurbs!...
love and hugs, maia

Thanks for the welcome
And I should also mention for no apparent reason that i'm learning Japanese, alot of people think its tricky but its actually a very straight forward and organised language.
Cool another Irish dude!
Of course we rock, thats why we always have to shove the fact that we're Irish in front of everyones face
Are you native Irish or Irish American or other?

Hi CroZ,
Don't stress about rejection. You should read Stephen King's book, On Writing. In it he tells how he pounded a nail into his wall by his desk to pin up all his rejections. He says he filled that nail in no time and had to pound in another. It goes with the territory.
And my unsolicited advice is to not get too excited about Hollywood. It's not all it's cracked up to be.
Cheers,

Native Irish, Wiklow.
Its funny you should mention steven king, people have been saying that I should just send a manuscript to whoever published his books, as you can imagine they hold him in low reguard.
