And the ship with black sails...

I really do feel awkward with introductions, so I'll be blunt. Nice to meet you all, call me Pirate Jenny. I'm a neurotic 15-year-old female 12th grade student from Australia and my meagre writing abilities have gone down the toilet.

I hate to sound off in vainglory, but there was a time when I used to not be so bad at writing. I even got sent to the gifted and talented workshops, won the odd prizes for poetry and novella writing earlier in high school, those sorts of accolades. But, somewhere along the line last year, in between the depression, sleep deprivation and other such cans of worms that go hand-in-hand with adolescence, I lost all confidence and ability for writing; practically for language and communication altogether. Now, here I am, gazing into the abyss of my final high school year (it gazes also into me), unable to piece together a story, evoke a feeling, build a character...and if I am, I have no way of recognising it. When I do write now, it tends to be boring, quasi-surrealist and leaves too much unexplained. Which is why I've joined this forum, in the hopes that some constructive criticism will help me get my groove back. This groove-regaining is very important because, as I said, I'm going to be starting my HSC in about a week, so it's vital that my writing output is all hits and no misses, like back in the old days. (Or perhaps standards were just lower then.) In any case, hopefully you people can help me help myself.

Enough about my writing, now I'll talk about my reading. My favourite authors are Haruki Murakami, Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Margaret Atwood, J.D. Salinger, William Goldman, Gao Xingjian, J.R.R. Tolkien, Art Spiegelman, Phillip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury and many many others. My other hobbies include animation, filmmaking and amateur science. I want to be a biologist and a director of artsy animated films in later years. Hurrah.

As I said, nice to meet you all, I’m looking forward to discussions with you in the future.

15 and in year 12... did you skip a year or two?

Welcome to the forums. We'll help you get your groove back on.

Yeah, I skipped 2nd and 9th grades. Nothing amazing, just the norm, to quote FLCL. Damn, I love that series. But I just realised I probably just flubbed that intro a bit with some ambiguity. To clarify, I officially started year 12 a week or so ago, I still have another year before I'm outta school altogether.
