it's me and help

Hi all at writing forums. I'm a first time novel writer, inbetween trying to be a better husband father and employee that is. I've read a few of the existing posts and think this community might be just what I'm looking for.

I hope that I'm not out of line jumping straight in with a requst for advice? In my novel I am thinking of heading each chapter with a verse of two of lyrics from pop songs that have inspired me over the years - song track to our lives type of thing. I am aware that permission is needed for use of any lyrics that are still copyright owned. I'm guessing there is no easy way to find who actually owns copyright for a work and what the best approach is to gain permission, but you don't get if you don't ask. With that in mind, has any forumite out there got any sage words for me on this one?

Hi Biff, welcome to the forums. If you are using the lyrics in a novel that will be sent out to publishing houses then yes you need the permission of the music publisher. They own the copyrights. And how you would get a hold of those big giants, I don't know....

Best of luck

Kimberly

Hi there, Biff, and welcome to the forums. Indeed, you need permission from the music company to publish any lyrics (or you should take them from songs that belong to a people, not an artist).
