Intro to Maithias.
Hello everyone.
Well, my short bio first. I'm Maithias (to almost everyone). I live in Louisiana and work as a Bladesmith at Nottoway plantation. I'm 20 years old, married, with a two year old son. I'm currently taking the first steps towards college, with the simple goal of becoming an English professor. Tough road, but it's one of the only ways to actually Retire from the arts around here.
My interests include Writing, Forging (German and Japanese swords. My specialty is the Heligier Sunder.) Martial Arts, and the single greatest video game in the world - Intelligent Qube. Anyone remember that one? Mind bending chaos at every turn! I love it.
I'm agnostic (can we discuss religion here?) though I'm leaning a little towards the Shinto-Buddha mix these days. Anyone else notice that inner-peace is a lot more elusive than it looks? I quit smoking two days ago, so the Zen is kicked into high gear to make up for the nicotine withdrawls. Doing well so far! Although I don't think I was meant to quit. I love the habit. Very spiritual. Like waves. Besides. What kind of man would I be if I just quit all the time? I'd be a quitter. Do I really want that?
Anyway, I'll wrap it up. I'm working on a book during my free time. Actually, I've been working on it for the last four years. I'll post a little on the other boards later, but for now, if'n you like what you see from this Suthern' Feller, then by all means, speak!

Welcome to the forums, Maithias! Congratulations on being cigarette-free for two days. It may seem like a small achievement to some, but I watched two of my grandparents fail to even cut back on the number of cigarettes that they smoked. Being able to give them up for two days is an awesome feat in my book.
Please feel free to contact a Mentor if you have any problems or questions. I hope you have an enjoyable time here.
Good luck with college!

Bladesmith... forging? Now that's interesting stuff. With that sort of background, I think you can be certain that the various fantasy writers around here will be desperate to talk to you.

Yes, the topics on the lounge are as open as you want them to be.... (though it does seem practically every time religion gets mentioned, it ends up getting unpleasant, and has to be shut down by the moderators. *sigh* )
But don't let that put you off - as I said; talk about anything
Have fun, and I'll see you around the site.
All the best.

Hi Maithias; great intro. I've yet to try giving up smoking - I love the contemplative ritual of it. In an unstable world, habits are a good thing to have, I think. Forgery is a truly fascinating interest.
Welcome to the forum!

Wow. What a kind greeting! Just a late check-in to see what's up, so this'll be short. (Work in five hours) But you've all made this welcome much finer than the last forum. Hope to speak to you all individually soon. If you see me on, feel free to give me a buzz.
More to come!

Yeah, well.... I kinda smoked a few after I posted. But for that one day, I felt pretty healthy! I should feel bad, but there's nothing like the taste of smoke. Like my big brother always says. Live well, die young. No one wants to live in a nursing home. On a personal note (I don't drop these often) my wife is in poor health, and it doesn't look like it's getting better. Sooooo, she being my one true love, I'm a little more lax to try and extend life to its limit. No one wants to live alone either, right? I think sixty is a nice age to close the book. Whence with my last breath I shall project my soul into the divine warmth of the everafter! Sho Sha Shinto, my friend.
Was that too over the top? Religion is one thing, but death can be sticky for most. I hope I didn't offend. If I did, Someone please delete this message. I won't mind at all.

My dad quit smoking at the age of 89. He'd smoked all his life - cigarettes - then cigars. He quit the day my mom died and he died 11 months later. Smoking is no recipe for dying young, it just ups your odds of doing so. Besides, everyone dies sooner or later and we get to decide how happy we want to be during our life.
oh yeah - loved reading your intro and welcome to you.

Hello and welcome to the forums, Maithias!
Sorry my welcome is a little late.
Your intro is terrific. Spudley is right, I think plenty of fantasy writers will be wanting to talk to you, myself included. I have always been fascinated with knifemaking and have even made a few simple blades. Forging is something I've wanted to learn but have never had the oppurtunity to do so.
I wish you the best of luck on quitting smoking. I did it once and it is a hard thing to do.
I hope you enjoy your time here and look forward to seeing some of your work. Have fun and I'll hopefully see you around the forums.
Cliff

I'm very interested in trading writing. I've pratice martial arts for 15 years, and am currenly studying Shaolin Gong Fu (with the Shaolin Ch'an Buddhist Temple of PA) and Kempo.
Do you have plans to sell any of the swords you're making?

A fellow martial artist! My history is pretty simple. Tae-kwon-do for ten years (big mistake. Useless style.) Four years of Ryuhendo, coupled with White Crane Judo and Swordsplay.
I've actually sold a few swords already. My easiest sell was to the owner of the Nottoway Restauraunt for a quickthree hundred dollars. A dying art, bladesmithing, but still a necessary one, I think. If you're interested, I'll send you some pics of my trademark sword, the Heligier Sunder.
as far as trading stories, I'm Always game! I hang out in the fiction forum. I'm working on the Threshoulde story. What about you?
If you want, send me a PM and we can shoot the breeze.

lol. Well, one thing keeping me from going straight away is that it takes around ten years to get there. You've gotta go through hell and back before you can get to be a professor. Ten years of college costs out the yin yang as well. But it's worth it to us both, I think.

Hey, that's great! Don't know if you caught it up there, but I roam the fiction boards. if you want to see my stuff. Just look for Threshoulde, and ignore the very first entry. That one's trashed.
Don't worry about me. I already know where you hang out.
As always, I welcome all PM's if you're game. I don't go into any discussion boards yet -- I think I'd like to get established in one board before I expand -- so if you want to talk, by all means, feel free.
Hope to see more of your work!

Yow! That didn't work out so well. I was just trying to quote you! Anyone know how to steer this board? Moxie, I hope you could seperate my text and yours. Also hope you'll bear with me on my ignorance to the internet. I may be twenty, but I'm more of a green-grass meditating twenty. I don't care much for electronics.

You forgot to add [/quote] at the end of the text you were quoting.
