A New Older Writer

Hi all. Just thought I'd let you know a little about me. At 58 years old, I've had only one semester of college writing courses, and that was many years ago. My work through my life has been in construction and electrical work.

I've written a few things, but nothing publishable (is that a word? ) Anyway, it has long been something of a dream of mine to write a full-length novel. I'm now 53,000+ words into it. I thought it was finished, and had left the ending open for a sequel. However, I've realized that I need to add whatever would have been a sequel to this book. It isn't long enough to be split. So, to quote an old over-used adage: "Back to the drawing board." I expect that, when done, the length will be between 80,000 and 100,000 words, which is a better length anyway.

The thing is that I'm not inclined to go back to college. It is not really an option for me. Besides, there are too many young people trying to get their lives set on course and colleges all around here are over-crowded to begin with. Students are being turned away. I can't see taking up classroom space as an old guy just wanting to write a book, when the space is so badly needed by these younger ones who are setting up a foundation for their careers.

I feel I do have a good basis for a novel (sci-fi genre - future setting), and the story is basically sound, but I do need some guidance. I have little money to spend on this, so I'll be checking out library books instead of buying them. My next effort will be to find a style book.

Anyway, I'm hoping it will be alright to ask questions here (some may be basic, but it's been awhile since I studied writing). I'm also hoping for constructive criticism about my writing, and would like to post a few things for critique.

So, that's who I am and why I'm here. This seems like a good, active forum and I look forward to hanging aroung awhile

Best to all......ReverieMan (yeah, it means - basically - daydreamer....what can I say?)

Hello and welcome to the forums ReverieMan!

Ask all the questions you need to ask, that is what these forum are all about. I for one look forward to seeing some of your work. There are plenty here that will be glad to read it and give their general opinions and to critique it. If you need any help, feel free to ask me or any of the Mentors. I'll see you around the forums. Have fun!

Welcome! Being an older writer, you have a big advantage over some of us younger ones--life experience. I hope you will pop into the various forums from time to time and impart some of your knowledge to those who need it.

Good luck with your novel!

Welcome from one old guy to another. We are the same age and I too was a contractor. I am retired now and spend most of my time writing. I have, however, been a writer all my life- I found it a satisfying hobby. (That every once and awhile made a buck) I never considered it a career. Now? Who knows?
Writing keeps me going. Jump in my friend you are in the right place. Any help I can offer is yours.

Welcome, Reverie Man.

I like to think of myself as "timeless" (I have a birthday this month - I am getting sensitive about it!).... and I always enjoy hearing people who are not younguns are first-time-serious writers.

There are many ways to hone your craft without going to college. Among the most important for me has just been practice, practice, practice, practice.
