New to the forum
Hey there. I am new to this forum, and I come here open-minded.
I actually started the day with the task of looking for a mentor. A mentor from Colorado would be great. One that has written short stories and novels alike. I had the thought that if I could be friend this person, I could learn from his/her mistakes or achievements. Doing so without being a pest. That's the key.
I have been writing on and off for about 6 years now. Just about as long as I have had my daughter. Over those years, I have written a number of short story beginnings, but I seem to slack off and push them aside without finishing them up.
My desire is to become a published author. For starters, I want this just so that I can say "Hey, I did it!". Secondly, I want to do so because I would like to quite working and write for a career. Saying that, I am not above telling you that I want to write a blockbuster. I want the royalties. I want the fat book deals. I would be lying to deny that.
Enough about me. Time to go read about this place.

I second that Spudley. After browsing around since March I stumbled upon this place in late July and it's where I spend most of my writing time. I don't believe in mentoring. I feel you could lose part of what makes you unique. Helpful suggestions, sharing and white knuckle writing work the best. To me, being published would be like winning the lottery and it's never the reason I write.

I'm with you in that shameless desire to be published category! Absolutely. I read all the time and I am awestruck by what I discover. I ache inside with each new discovery. I become immediately hopeful and despair-ridden all at once. It's a terrible and fantastic feeling. I write for that feeling.
I, too, have tried seeking a mentor. I think it's been a diversionary tactic for me! (ie: if I look for a mentor but don't find one, then I can successfully use that as an excuse for not writing because I will never know whether or not I'm getting any better).
I'm no mentor, but I have ideas about ways to achieve goals. If you'd consider a partnership, email me. Partners are great.
I'm new, too. So I feel silly welcoming you to the 'fold,' as I don't feel part of the 'fold' myself. So, instead, I'll offer my 'nice to meet you!'

Welcome *S* As a newbie (okay Im a "writer" now but still feel quite new lol) I can honestly say that there are many areas here to find help and suggestions, and show your work!
Lit.org is where I started and they publish everything from poetry to articles. If you havent already, you might want to check them out as well.
I look forward to reading your work!

Trudat! I joined in order to read crits, and in so doing, avoid making the same mistake, and also to get some of my own stuff "critted". Mentors are okay I guess, but I'll rather get creative criticism from contemporaries. And on this site, I have found out that I have a great deal wanting in my command of the english language (strange feeling, over here, everyone thinks my vocab is sooo rich). Welcome aboard friend, I'm looking forward to seeing your own style, and to assisting in any way I possibly can.
