Intro

Hey all -

Well, I've been hanging around and commenting peoples' work for a few days so thought it was time to make an introduction. My real name is Eric, I'm 30 with a wife and newborn son.

I'm here because I've just lost my job, with enough of a payout that for the first time in my life I'll have a few months to concentrate on writing and photography - the two creative things I enjoy most.

My father is an English Lit lecturer who had me reading and writing from my earliest days. I remember embarking on my first novel at the age of 7, and have been writing (but not usually finishing anything) since then.

My track record of failing to finish the stories I start has led me to give myself a mission during my period of unemployment: 1000 words and a roll of film every day.

I'm planning on being an active member here, and welcome communication and criticism from anyone.

Welcome to the boards, Crazy Legs.

Crazy legs keep you dancing on your feet, I'm guessing.

My target is 1000 words a day, though recently I haven't been keeping that up.

Hi Eric.

A roll of film a day?? Yikes!

Writing, but not usually finishing.... hehehe... yep. I can relate to that! Definitely one of my biggest failings too.

1000 words a day... yep. good plan. Should get you into a good habit if you can keep it up. I wish I had the self-discipline to do that.

(It should also give you lots of material to post at Lit.org! )

Anyway, welcome to our little forum. I hope you have loads of fun here.

Welcome crazylegs. 1000 words a day. If I had that much time, I could probably do that.

Well, I'm not doing too bad on my 1000 word mission. I manage it maybe two days out of three. Today has been a bad day ... our 4-month old was awake all night teething, and had to go to the Doctor this morning so I'm only now (3pm my time) getting some quiet time.

I'm on a mission to return quality to my writing after 7 years of corporate life that has drained the creativity from my English and turned me in to a report-writing, bullet-pointing, executive-summarising, business-speaking bore!

Welcome, Crazy Legs...and thanks for putting your goals out. Seeing what others are doing helps me get going on my own goals. I also have about a 3 month block of time that is my own. It's kind of cool and kind of scary all at the same time.

Good luck, Mariella! I know what you mean about feeling simultaneously liberated and terrified. Let me know how you do with your writing - maybe we can egg each other on.

I noticed you're in Alaksa - our initial plan during the time off was to take a road trip up to Alaska. I had an Aunt in Anchorage who died recently before I met her, and I wanted to go and find out what I could about her.

She ran Stewart's Photographic in Anchorage; had a jade mine; had pet reindeer called Star; and back in the 1940s she single-handedly drove an amphibious cadillac the entire length of the Yukon - can you see why I wanted to meet her!?!

Hey, Eric. Stewart's is way famous here. I once took in a camera I had dropped on a runway...I was in a float plane at the time!!! ...only to be told I now had a $400+ paperweight! Ha. I know about Star...but I had no idea about the amphibious cadillac! How totally cool!!! Alaska is amazing. You should try to come up at some point. Especially with such an interesting Aunt to discover.

I'm actually doing pretty well with a new goal I mapped out for myself. I can't say a lot about it right now, but I'll keep ya'll updated on my progress.
