Tom's arm began to tire--he had been slicing mercilessly at the jungle foliage for the better part of two hours, completely lost. His map had dissolved in the dense humidity of the previous night, and by morning the only thing that remained of it could have resembled strangely colored Cream of Wheat. "No matter," he panted, "if I keep heading north, I'm sure to get out of this decrepit mess."
Tom continued carving his own path out of the flora and fauna when suddenly he found himself in a clearing alongside few hundred other individuals each dressed in professional attire. At his entrance, each one, who had been mingling about with each other--some holding paper, PDAs, laptops, or other miscellaneous items--turned to face him. Puzzled, Tom's mouth fell agape to the greeting of several hundreds simultaneous cries of "Hello!".
"Umm...hi." Tom replied confusedly.
I don't really know where that came from; just some random idea that (hopefully) got me started with a bit of a bang

.
Anyway, my real name is Tom, and while I may not be living and breathing the written word like I'm sure so many others on this board are (lol, don't worry, I am just kidding...no offense intended

), it is a side hobby of mine that both others and myself have realized I have a talent for and that I would like to explore a bit.
I suppose you could say that the above story was how I happened to find this site: just me slogging through the vast reams of information on the internet in which I stumbled upon this quaint little forum.
I am the anonymous friend whose poem appeared in the
"Untitled" thread in the Poetry board...my internet had gone wonky on me that past several days and I wanted an opinion on it. A friend, who you all know as the ever-so-talented
dreaming_writer, referred me here.
I prefer writing short poems that are heavy on symbolism and open to multiple interpretations, and I keep a small journal (only 17 entries over 4 months) of these that mostly any poems I submit are from. I also enjoy writing fiction of many sorts, and I've tried my hands in many different genres with varying degrees of success.
I'm currently a freshman entering into college, and I plan on minoring in Creative Writing as a supplement to my major in Information and Computer Science.
In any case, this forum looks like a nice sized place to get a little help from friends. I don't plan on being the most active of participants here, but you'll probably see me around.

PS- "kon nichi wa" is Japanese, which translates into an informal (I believe--I am quite far from fluent) into "Hello".
