    Greetings,

My name is Jim and I am an aspiring writer of short fiction. I recently quit my full-time job for personal reasons and am using much of my spare time to ready some of my better work for submission. While favoring speculative fiction and SF I am also exploring themes in fantasy that are alternatives to sword and sorcery.

I joined to see what other people had to say about the craft of prose and get some tips on self-editing my work. Perhaps there are secrets undisclosed in the style manuals.

I am currently trying to stay optimistic about the job search. As Mr. Micawber said time and again: "something will turn up."

    Welcome to the forums, Jim.
“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities.” ~ James Allen

    Hi Jim,
Best of luck in the job search.

Meanwhile welcome to the forum. It's good to meet another sci fi/fantasy buff.

I know all about quitting for personal reasons. I did it to save what little I had left of my sanity. I think I'll write about sitting in front of my workplace, watching the clock on the dashboard tick tick tick toward my start time, the nervousness growing within me, replaying the events of the day prior. I didn't want to spend one single second more there than I had to.

Welcome and good luck. I was an avid reader of SF back in the day, although it's been a while I look forward to enjoying some of your posts. I'm more of a picture painter writer, for lack of a better term. I see a leaf falling to the ground and think of everything that leaf had gone through to get to that final chapter in its life.
