I am in high school at the moment, and just finished my 3rd novel. For the past 6 years I've been writing short stories, novels, and ideas for novels, but as is often the case with young writers it kind of sucked. Each story would make me a better writer however, and I look back now on previous things I did with a horrified expression on my face.
After finishing the first draft of my newest novel, something I've worked on (research included, road trips etc...) for about 7 months, I had a reviewer friend of mine (he's a professional) read it.
Lo and behold! He LIKED it!
I then let a small number of family members read it, and encouraged them to critique anything they found and read as if they didn't know it was written by me. They found lots of things they disliked, but yet again the encouraging message came that they LIKED it!
So now I'm at the stage where I'm actually considering getting this thing published, and suddenly I have been thrust into the terrible, dream-crushing world of Publishing. Not only am I in the revising stage, which sucks way harder than I ever realized, but I'm also having to research agents, publishers, and query letters.
I look forward to getting to know all of you on my epic quest to beat back the odds of a first time author getting published (especially a teenage one)
